Sky Tower (328m), Viaduct Harbour, Britomart & Wynyard Quarter Waterfront Walk
A self-guided route across central Auckland's waterfront and skyline: start at the 19th-century brick warehouses of Britomart and the 1912 Ferry Building, cross the Te Wero bridge through Viaduct Harbour to Wynyard Quarter, and ascend the 328m Sky Tower.
Transformed over the past quarter-century by three America's Cup regattas (2000, 2003, and 2021), central Auckland's waterfront stretches for two flat, step-free kilometres along the southern edge of the Waitematā Harbour. Walking from the heritage brick lanes of Britomart west to the industrial silos of Wynyard Quarter and up to the 328-metre Sky Tower takes you through the maritime heart of the City of Sails.

1. Britomart, the 1912 Ferry Building & Viaduct Harbour (America's Cup Basin)
- Britomart Precinct & the 1912 Edwardian Ferry Building: Begin at Waitematā Station (Britomart), housed inside the 1912 Edwardian Baroque Chief Post Office on Lower Queen Street. Immediately behind it, eighteen restored late-Victorian kauri-and-brick mercantile warehouses frame tree-lined Takutai Square, while across Quay Street stands the terracotta-and-sandstone 1912 Ferry Building, gateway to the Hauraki Gulf islands.
- Viaduct Harbour & the New Zealand Maritime Museum (Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa): Walking five minutes west past Commercial Bay brings you into Viaduct Harbour, a former commercial timber and fishing basin rebuilt to host the 2000 America's Cup syndicates. At Hobson Wharf on the eastern arm stands the New Zealand Maritime Museum (maritimemuseum.co.nz), which traces a millennium of ocean navigation from twin-hulled Polynesian voyaging waka hourua to Sir Peter Blake's America's Cup winning yacht KZ 1 and classic heritage scow Ted Ashby (which sails on harbour cruises from the museum pontoon).

2. Te Wero Lifting Bridge, Wynyard Quarter (Silo Park) & the 328-Metre Sky Tower
- Crossing Te Wero Bridge to Wynyard Quarter & Silo Park: Follow the boardwalk across the double-bascule Te Wero Bridge (which lifts to let tall-masted superyachts enter the inner basin) onto the wide promenade of North Wharf in Wynyard Quarter. Once a closed petrochemical tank farm, the peninsula now houses the revamped Auckland Fish Market, the harbourfront tidal steps of Karanga Plaza, and Silo Park, anchored by the 35-metre-tall six-pack of Silo 6 cement storage cylinders and a viewing gantry looking straight west to the eight-lane Auckland Harbour Bridge (opened 1959).
- Ascending the 328-Metre Sky Tower (skycityauckland.co.nz): Finish by walking ten minutes uphill along Victoria Street West to the Sky Tower (opened August 1997). At 328 metres (1,076 feet), it is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere, engineered with eight raking composite legs to withstand 200 km/h winds. Glass-fronted lifts race in 40 seconds to the Main Observation Level at 186 metres (where 38mm-thick seamless glass floor panels let you look straight down to the pavement) and the higher Sky Deck at 220 metres, where clear days reveal an 80-kilometre panorama across Auckland's volcanic cones and Rangitoto Island. Thrill-seekers can also clip into a full-body harness for the outdoor SkyWalk around the unrailed 1.2-metre-wide pergola at 192 metres or take the wire-guided 85 km/h SkyJump.
