Best Time to Visit Belo Horizonte: Dry Highland Season, Comida di Buteco & Climate
Month-by-month weather guide to Belo Horizonte using official 1991-2020 INMET normals: compare the sunny April-September season, Comida di Buteco, and summer rains.
Because Belo Horizonte sits between 850 and 1,100 metres above sea level in the mountains of Minas Gerais, its tropical highland climate (Köppen Aw/Cwa) escapes the intense coastal heat of Brazil. According to official 1991 to 2020 INMET climate normals, daytime highs remain mild and pleasant all year, ranging from 24.6°C in July to 29.3°C in February, while rainfall divides the calendar into a crystal-clear dry season and a lush green summer.

April to September: The Sunny Highland Dry Season (Best Overall)
From April through September, Atlantic cold fronts give way to stable high-pressure skies over Minas Gerais, reducing rainfall to just 2 to 6 days per month (and a mere 8 to 11 millimetres total in June, July, and August):
- Ideal Weather for Inhotim & Ouro Preto: Afternoon temperatures hover between 24.6°C and 27.7°C under deep cobalt skies, making this the single best window for walking the outdoor botanical trails between art pavilions at Instituto Inhotim, cycling the 18-kilometre perimeter of Lagoa da Pampulha, and climbing the steep stone streets of Ouro Preto. Evenings dip to a crisp 13.8°C to 16.7°C, so pack a light jacket for outdoor tables in Savassi.
- Comida di Buteco (April to May): Founded in Belo Horizonte in 2000, this beloved month-long culinary festival sees dozens of traditional family-run botecos across every neighbourhood unveil creative new bar plates (petiscos) as locals and judges vote for the year's champion.
- Winter Festivals & Ipê Blossoms (June to September): June and July bring the colourful Arraial de Belo Horizonte (Festa Junina quadrilha dances) and the Winter Arts Festival in nearby Ouro Preto, while July to September sees pink, purple, and golden-yellow Ipê trees bloom around Praça da Liberdade.

October to March: The Green Summer Season
Warm temperatures (highs of 27.8°C to 29.3°C, lows around 18.8°C to 19.6°C) and afternoon tropical showers return from October to March, peaking between November and January (15 to 18 rain days per month). If you visit during summer, schedule outdoor walks at Pampulha or Parque das Mangabeiras for the sunny morning hours and reserve late afternoons for the indoor museums of Circuito Liberdade and the covered aisles of Mercado Central.
