Savassi, Lourdes & Santa Tereza Guide: Belo Horizonte's Best Neighbourhoods
Explore Belo Horizonte's three most charismatic districts: pedestrianised Savassi for coffee and bars, leafy Lourdes for fine dining, and bohemian Santa Tereza.
While monumental plazas and lakeside pavilions showcase the civic ambition of Belo Horizonte, everyday life in the capital of Minas Gerais unfolds across three distinct, personality-filled neighbourhoods: the pedestrian café crossroads of Savassi, the tree-shaded culinary streets of Lourdes, and the musical cobblestone hills of Santa Tereza.

1. Savassi: Specialty Coffee, Bookshops & Sidewalk Botecos
Located immediately south of Praça da Liberdade where the diagonal boulevards of Avenida Cristóvão Colombo and Avenida Getúlio Vargas intersect, Praça Diogo de Vasconcelos, known to everyone as Praça da Savassi, was converted into a four-block pedestrian promenade with fountains, benches, and open-air terraces. During the morning and afternoon, the surrounding blocks of Rua Pernambuco, Rua Sergipe, Rua Antônio de Albuquerque, and Rua Paraíba hum with third-wave coffee roasteries pouring micro-lot beans from the Serra da Mantiqueira and Chapada de Minas, alongside independent bookshops and bakeries. After 18:00 from Wednesday through Saturday, the sidewalks transform into a lively open-air living room of craft beer taprooms and traditional bars.

2. Lourdes: Neo-Gothic Architecture and Haute Cozinha Mineira
Walking ten minutes west across Avenida João Pinheiro brings you into Lourdes, arguably the greenest and most sophisticated residential district inside Avenida do Contorno. Its architectural centrepiece is the Basílica Nossa Senhora de Lourdes on Rua da Bahia (completed in 1923 with a 47-metre central spire, stained-glass lancets, and three bronze bells). Two blocks west, Rua Marília de Dirceu, Rua Bárbara Heliodora, and Rua Curitiba form Belo Horizonte's premier dining corridor, where award-winning chefs reinterpret classic Minas Gerais ingredients such as pequi, ora-pro-nóbis, jabuticaba berries, and aged Canastra cheeses in refined bistro settings.

3. Santa Tereza: Birthplace of Clube da Esquina
Just east of Avenida do Contorno across the 1929 Viaduto Santa Tereza, the neighbourhood of Santa Tereza preserves the feel of an early twentieth-century interior Minas town, with low-rise pastel houses, mango trees, and quiet cobblestone squares around Praça Duque de Caxias. Here, on the corner of Rua Divinópolis and Rua Paraisópolis (now marked by a bronze street-corner sculpture), young musicians Milton Nascimento, Lô Borges, Márcio Borges, and Beto Guedes gathered in the late 1960s and early 1970s to compose the harmonies of Clube da Esquina (1972), one of the most influential albums in Brazilian history. Pull up a sidewalk table on Praça Duque de Caxias at historic Bar do Bolão (open since 1961) or visit the weekend farmers' and craft stalls at the Mercado Distrital de Santa Tereza.
