Pampulha Modern Ensemble Guide: Niemeyer's UNESCO Masterpiece on the Lagoon

Nine kilometres north of downtown Belo Horizonte, the 18-kilometre shoreline of Lagoa da Pampulha holds the birthplace of Brazilian modernist architecture. In 1940, dynamic young Mayor Juscelino Kubitschek commissioned a 32-year-old Rio de Janeiro architect named Oscar Niemeyer to design a lakeside leisure and cultural complex around a newly dammed reservoir. With engineer Joaquim Cardozo, landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx, painter Cândido Portinari, and sculptor Alfredo Ceschiatti, Niemeyer created the curve-driven Pampulha Modern Ensemble, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016.

1. Igreja de São Francisco de Assis (Igrejinha da Pampulha, 1943)

Completed in 1943 (though so avant-garde that conservative church authorities waited until 1959 to consecrate it), the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi is the icon of Belo Horizonte:

• Parabolic Vaults & Portinari's Exterior Murals: Engineered by Joaquim Cardozo, four undulating reinforced-concrete parabolic shells form both roof and walls simultaneously. The rear facade facing the plaza is clad in a striking blue-and-white ceramic tile (azulejo) mural by Cândido Portinari depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis surrounded by birds and fishes, while abstract mosaic bands by Paulo Werneck wrap the curved side walls.
• Inside the Nave: Beneath the curved wooden ceiling stand Portinari's fourteen expressive painted panels of the Via Sacra (Stations of the Cross), a luminous high-altar fresco of Saint Francis, and a bronze low-relief baptistery screen sculpted by Alfredo Ceschiatti depicting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

2. Casa do Baile (1943) and Iate Tênis Clube (1942)

A pleasant twenty-minute walk east along the water leads to the Casa do Baile, set on a small circular artificial island linked to the shore by an eleven-metre arched concrete footbridge. Designed as a popular lakeside dance hall and restaurant, its circular glass pavilion is joined to a dressing-room block by a ribbon-like undulating concrete canopy (marquise) that traces the exact curve of the island's edge. Today it operates as a public Reference Centre for Architecture, Urbanism, and Design. Nearby sits the 1942 Iate Tênis Clube, whose angled butterfly roof (*telhado borboleta*) launched a mid-century architectural trend across the Americas.

3. Museu de Arte da Pampulha (MAP, 1942) and Casa Kubitschek (1943)

Inaugurated in 1942 as the Cassino da Pampulha before reopening in 1957 as an art museum, MAP sits amid Burle Marx gardens and Ceschiatti bronzes. Nearby at number 4188 stands the butterfly-roofed Casa Kubitschek (1943) house-museum, easily paired with a tour of Mineirão Stadium.
