Mineirão Stadium, Parque Municipal & Historic Centro Guide, Belo Horizonte

Visit Belo Horizonte's iconic 1965 Mineirão Stadium and Brazilian Football Museum, stroll the 1897 Parque Municipal, and explore Praça da Estação.

Beyond its art museums and food markets, Belo Horizonte showcases more than a century of Brazilian architectural evolution, from the 1897 Belle Époque parks and railway palaces of lower Centro to the monumental brutalist concrete ribs of the 1965 Mineirão Stadium in Pampulha.

1. Estádio do Mineirão (1965) and the Brazilian Football Museum

Rising just south of Lagoa da Pampulha beside the sibling curved roof of the Mineirinho indoor arena, the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto, universally known as the Mineirão, was designed by modernist architects Eduardo Mendes Guimarães Júnior and Gaspar Garreto and inaugurated on 5 September 1965. Listed as a protected municipal heritage monument for its rhythmic ring of eighty-eight external reinforced-concrete structural ribs, the 61,000-seat stadium is the sacred stage of Minas Gerais football (home to Cruzeiro Esporte Clube and the historic Clássico Mineiro against Clube Atlético Mineiro). Even on non-match days, visitors can walk across the vast Esplanada do Mineirão and join a guided tour of the Museu Brasileiro do Futebol (MBF), stepping through the players' dressing rooms, the press auditorium, and the tunnel right onto the edge of the pitch; check the official Estádio Mineirão portal for current tour times and match schedules.

2. Parque Municipal Américo Renné Giannetti (1897) & Palácio das Artes

Right in the centre of downtown along Avenida Afonso Pena lies the 18-hectare Parque Municipal Américo Renné Giannetti, designed by French landscape architect Paul Villon (a disciple of Auguste Glaziou) and inaugurated on 26 September 1897, more than two months before the city itself was officially founded. Shaded by towering sapucaia, fig, and bamboo groves around romantic boating ponds and footbridges, the park also contains two major cultural venues:

  • Palácio das Artes (1971): The state's premier performing arts complex (incorporating initial architectural sketches by Oscar Niemeyer), housing the 1,700-seat Grande Teatro Cemig, contemporary art galleries, and a curated Minas Gerais handicraft centre.
  • Feira Hippie da Avenida Afonso Pena (Sundays): Every Sunday morning since 1969, the wide boulevard outside the park gates transforms into one of Latin America's largest open-air artisan markets, with hundreds of stalls selling leather goods, shoes, ceramics, and regional street snacks.

3. Praça da Estação, Rua da Bahia & Edifício Acaiaca

From the northern gate of the park, walk down to the wide granite esplanade of Praça Rui Barbosa (Praça da Estação) to admire the 1922 Eclectic facade of the Central Railway Station (home to the Museu de Artes e Ofícios), then climb historical Rua da Bahia past the 1943 Art Deco Edifício Acaiaca (famous for the two stylized indigenous cariátides flanking its portal on Avenida Afonso Pena) and the castle-like 1930 Museu da Moda (MUMO) all the way up to Praça da Liberdade.
