Instituto Inhotim Guide: Contemporary Art & Tropical Botanical Gardens (Brumadinho)

Plan a day trip from Belo Horizonte to Instituto Inhotim in Brumadinho: explore 24 contemporary art pavilions and 4,300 plant species across 140 hectares of gardens.

Sixty kilometres southwest of Belo Horizonte in the green hills of Brumadinho, Instituto Inhotim is unlike any other museum on Earth. Conceived in the mid-1980s on a former farm by art patron Bernardo Paz (inspired by conversations with his friend Roberto Burle Marx) and opened to the public in 2006, Inhotim integrates 24 monumental contemporary art pavilions and dozens of outdoor sculptures into 140 hectares of landscaped tropical botanical gardens framed by 786 hectares of preserved Atlantic Forest and Cerrado woodland.

1. Must-See Art Pavilions Along the Three Trail Axes

Rather than displaying works inside a single multi-storey building, Inhotim gives individual Brazilian and international artists entire custom-built architectural pavilions spread along three colour-coded forest and lakeside trails (Orange, Pink, and Yellow):

  • Galeria Adriana Varejão (2008): A cantilevered concrete cube poised above an emerald mirror pond filled with aquatic plants; inside, shattered ceramic azulejo walls (Linda do Rosário and Celacanto Provoca Maremoto) lead up to a rooftop terrace featuring ceramic-painted benches by Rirkrit Tiravanija.
  • Sonic Pavilion (Pavilhão Sônico, Doug Aitken, 2009): Perched on the highest hilltop along the Orange Route, this circular frosted-glass pavilion surrounds a 202-metre-deep borehole drilled straight into the bedrock, where ultra-sensitive geophones amplify the real-time acoustic rumble of the Earth's interior into the room.
  • Galeria Cildo Meireles, Tunga & Claudia Andujar: Walk through Cildo Meireles's monochromatic crimson house interior (Desvio para o Vermelho) and shattered-glass labyrinth (Através), explore the theatrical riverside pavilions of Tunga (True Rouge and Galeria Psicoativa), and visit the red-brick Galeria Claudia Andujar (dedicated to five decades of photography with the Yanomami people) and the two infinity installations of Yayoi Kusama.

2. A World-Renowned Botanical Garden (Over 4,300 Plant Species)

Officially accredited as a Brazilian Botanical Garden in 2010, Inhotim shelters more than 4,300 plant species across five themed gardens, including the Jardim Veredas, the Vandário orchid house, and one of the planet's largest living collections of palm trees (over 1,000 species) and Araceae (aroids), alongside giant Victoria amazonica water lilies.

3. Practical Planning: Tickets, Shuttles & Electric Carts

  • How to Get There from Belo Horizonte: Official tourist coaches depart at 08:15 on open days from the central Rodoviária and Terminal Turístico JK (returning at 16:30 or 17:30 on weekends), or you can drive or take an Uber in 75 to 90 minutes via highway BR-381; check the official Inhotim portal to reserve dated entry tickets (and optional internal electric golf-cart wristbands for the steeper hilltop trails) before you travel.
