Best Time to Visit Bodrum: Warm Autumn Seas, May Bougainvillea and Regattas

Why late May, June, September and October deliver the best balance of warm turquoise water and breezy evenings.

Sitting on a breezy peninsula jutting out into the southern Aegean, Bodrum enjoys lower humidity and stronger sea breezes than the Mediterranean coast around Antalya. While the beach season runs for nearly six full months from May through late October, the finest times to experience the peninsula are mid-May to late June and September to late October.

Late Spring and Early Summer (May and June) shows Bodrum at its freshest. The hills are still green from spring rains, magenta bougainvillea cascades over every whitewashed wall in the Old Town, and daytime temperatures climb from 25°C in May to 30°C in June. You can walk through Bodrum Castle and the Mausoleum comfortably at midday, hotel rates sit 30 to 40 percent below peak summer levels, and daily gulet boats to Orak Island have plenty of space on deck.

High Summer (July and August) brings hot, cloudless days averaging 34°C to 36°C (cooled along the northern coast of Yalıkavak and Göltürkbükü by the north-westerly Meltem wind) and peak domestic and international crowds. If visiting in July or August, book dinner tables and beach decks in advance, sightsee in the late morning, and spend the middle of the day on the water.

The Golden Autumn & The Bodrum Cup (September and October) is the secret favourite of seasoned Aegean travellers. Throughout September and October, the Aegean Sea is actually warmer than it is in May or early June (holding steady at 22°C to 25°C), daytime air sits at an ideal 24°C to 29°C, and the summer crowds depart. In the third week of October, the peninsula celebrates the end of the sailing season with The Bodrum Cup, when more than a hundred handcrafted wooden gulet schooners raise full white sails to race between Bodrum, Gumüşlük and Knidos.

Winter and Early Spring (November to April) is quiet and mild (15°C to 19°C), when green Bodrum mandarins ripen in the orchards of Bitez and weekend tangerine-harvest festivals take over the villages. Check what to wear in Bodrum before packing.
