Day Trip from Bodrum to Kos Island (Greece) by 20-Minute Fast Ferry
Crossing four kilometres of Aegean water in 20 minutes from Bodrum to explore historic Kos Town in Greece.
Looking southwest from Bodrum Castle or Akyarlar, the green mountains rising just four kilometres across the water belong to the Greek Dodecanese island of Kos (İstanköy), birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Because high-speed catamarans cross the strait in just 20 minutes (and conventional ferries take 45 minutes), Kos is one of the fastest international cross-border day trips in Europe.
Two Departure Ports in Bodrum (Check Your Ticket)
- 1. From Bodrum Town (Kale / Halikarnas Pier & Bodrum Cruise Port): the most convenient option if you are staying in Bodrum Town. Morning catamarans and ferries depart around early in the morning to early in the morning either from the international customs terminal right below Bodrum Castle (Kale İskelesi) or from Bodrum Cruise Port at Kumbahçe (15 minutes' walk east along the beach), docking right in the centre of Kos Town Harbour in 20 to 45 minutes, with return boats departing Kos around in the afternoon to in the early evening.
- 2. From Turgutreis (D-Marin Terminal on the Western Peninsula): if you are staying in Gümüşlük, Yalıkavak or Turgutreis, ferries also cross in 20 to 30 minutes from Turgutreis harbour to Kos.
Passport, Schengen & Visa-on-Arrival Rules
Because you are crossing an external border between Turkey and the European Union (Schengen Area), you must carry your physical valid passport (ID cards are only valid for EU citizens):
- Holders of UK, US, Canadian, EU, Australian or valid Schengen visas/passports: simply book your ferry ticket online 24 hours ahead and go straight to the terminal passport control 60 minutes before departure.
- Turkish citizens (requiring a visa): Kos is part of the official Greek Dodecanese 7-Day Express Visa-on-Arrival (Kapıda Vize) scheme; you must submit your passport copies, biometric photo and application documents to the accredited ferry agency at least 4 to 5 working days before your trip.
A 5-Hour Walking Loop in Kos Town (No Bus Needed)
Everything in Kos Town sits within ten minutes' walk of the ferry ramp: walk across the 16th-century stone bridge into the Castle of the Knights of St John (Neratzia Castle), stand beneath the ancient Plane Tree of Hippocrates beside the 1786 Gazi Hasan Pasha Mosque, wander the mosaic-floored Roman villas of the Western Archaeological Site and Casa Romana (both free or low-cost), and enjoy a long Greek lunch of grilled octopus, saganaki and ouzo under the bougainvillea of the Old Town (or take the 15-minute mini-train 4 km uphill to the 4th-century BC healing sanctuary of the Asklepieion).
