Çekirge Thermal Baths and Bursa's Historic Hot-Spring Hammams
Soaking in natural 45°C geothermal dome pools built by Byzantine emperors and Ottoman sultans in Çekirge.
Unlike standard Turkish hammams in Istanbul that heat ordinary tap water over a furnace to create steam on a marble slab, Bursa's baths, known locally as kaplıcalar (thermal springs), are fed by natural subterranean geothermal mineral springs that bubble out of the fault lines along the western foot of Mount Uludağ at temperatures between 44°C and 80°C. Rich in bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium and sulphate, the waters of the western hillside district of Çekirge have drawn royalty since Byzantine Empress Theodora bathed here with a retinue of 4,000 attendants in 525 AD. Every historic kaplıca features a deep, domed natural hot-spring thermal plunge pool (aslan ağzı havuzu) alongside the traditional heated marble scrub slab (göbek taşı).
Comparing the 4 Best Historic Thermal Baths in Bursa
- Eski Kaplıca (Armutlu Hamamı, Inside Kervansaray Thermal Hotel, Çekirge): the oldest continuously operating thermal monument in Bursa. Built between 1385 and 1389 by Sultan Murad I directly over the vaulted foundations of Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora's 6th-century Byzantine imperial baths, its circular seven-metre hot-spring pool is surrounded by eight antique Byzantine marble columns and fed by a marble lion's head spout. Separate men's and women's historical domed sections (or hours); open to non-hotel day guests with towel and locker included.
- Yeni Kaplıca (Built 1552 by Rüstem Pasha, Bademli Bahçe, Çekirge): commissioned during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent by his Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha in gratitude after the mineral waters cured his gout, and lined originally with blue hexagonal Iznik tiles around a grand octagonal hot pool fed by a tiger-headed marble spout.
- Kükürtlü Termal (Inside the Uludağ University Thermal Complex): fed by distinct sulphur-rich (kükürtlü) springs just east of Çekirge, prized for skin and joint relaxation with separate men's and women's historic domed pools.
- Private Family Thermal Baths (Aile Kabinleri / Özel Banyolar): if you are travelling as a couple or family and prefer complete privacy rather than gender-segregated communal domes, historic thermal hotels along Çekirge Caddesi (such as Marigold, Çelik Palas, Boyugüzel or Gonluferah) rent private marble-lined thermal bath rooms (özel aile banyosu) by the hour, where you fill your own sunken marble pool straight from the natural 45°C mineral spring tap.
