What to Wear in Bursa: Mosque Etiquette, Uludağ Layers and Cobblestone Shoes
Why every Bursa daypack needs a warm layer for the Uludağ cable car, grippy shoes for Cumalıkızık and a scarf.
Packing for Bursa requires planning for a 1,600-metre altitude jump in twenty-five minutes alongside respectful attire for Turkey's most revered early-Ottoman mosques and royal mausoleums. Keep these four practical items in mind when packing your bag.
Four Practical Packing Rules for Bursa
- A Warm Fleece or Windbreaker for the Uludağ Cable Car (Even in July or August): at the lower Teferrüç Teleferik station in Bursa, it may be a sunny 32°C in a T-shirt; twenty-five minutes later when you step out of the gondola at Sarıalan (1,635m) or Kurbağa Kaya (1,810m), the mountain air is 12°C to 15°C colder with a fresh alpine breeze. Always slip a packable fleece, jumper or windproof jacket into your daypack before boarding the cable car.
- Rubber-Soled Walking Shoes (For Cumalıkızık & Tophane Cobbles): the 700-year-old streets of Cumalıkızık are paved with large, uneven river boulders sloped toward a central water channel that can be damp and slick, and the lanes connecting Tophane down to Ulu Cami are steep. Leave thin smooth-soled sandals and heels behind; wear cushioned trainers or flat walking shoes with grip.
- Respectful Mosque Attire, Easy Slip-Off Shoes and Socks: during a single day in Bursa you will step inside Ulu Cami, the Green Mosque, the Green Tomb, Twelve Muradiye Tombs and the Tombs of Osman and Orhan Gazi, removing your shoes at the threshold of every single one. Wear shoes that slip on and off easily, carry a pair of clean socks in your pocket (if wearing sandals in summer), wear trousers or a knee-length skirt/dress that covers shoulders and knees, and women should bring a lightweight scarf (or pick up a 100% Bursa silk scarf at Koza Han on your first morning).
- Swimwear for Çekirge's Thermal Springs: if you plan to use the mixed thermal spa pools at hotels in Çekirge (note that traditional gender-segregated historic kaplıca domes provide a cotton peştemal wrap on site).
