Getting to Bursa from Istanbul by BUDO/İDO Ferry, Highway Coach and Airport

Comparing the 1h50m BUDO sea-bus ferry from Istanbul Sirkeci with direct Osmangazi Bridge coaches to Bursa.

Lying just 90 kilometres south of Istanbul across the eastern arm of the Sea of Marmara (and 150 kilometres by highway via the Osmangazi Suspension Bridge), Bursa is both a favourite multi-day destination and an easy weekend escape from Istanbul. Choosing between the high-speed sea-bus ferry and the intercity highway coach depends on where you are starting in Istanbul.

Option 1: By High-Speed Sea Bus Ferry (BUDO & İDO, Best from Sultanahmet, Karaköy or Kadıköy, ~1 hour 50 mins)

If you are staying in historic central Istanbul, skipping highway traffic completely by sailing straight across the Sea of Marmara into Bursa's coastal port of Mudanya (or Güzelyalı) is by far the smoothest, most scenic arrival:

  • BUDO (Bursa Sea Buses, Operated by Bursa Municipality): modern white-and-yellow catamarans depart 6 to 8 times daily right from the heart of old Istanbul at Eminönü / Sirkeci Pier (just 5 minutes' walk from Galata Bridge and the T1 Tram) and reach Mudanya Pier in 1 hour 50 minutes. Book your numbered seat online at budo.burulas.com.tr a day or two ahead.
  • Connecting from Mudanya Pier to Central Bursa (30 mins): the moment the BUDO ferry ramp drops at Mudanya, yellow municipal Bus F3 (to Heykel / Ulucami) and Bus 1/M (to Emek Metro Station) wait directly outside the pier terminal, timed to every single arriving boat. Tap a contactless bank card or BursaKart on the bus to reach the BursaRay Metro in 15 minutes or downtown Ulu Cami in 35 minutes.
  • İDO Sea Buses: also sail from Yenikapı and Kadıköy to Güzelyalı/Mudanya.

Option 2: Direct Highway Coaches via the Osmangazi Bridge (~2 to 2.5 hours)

  • From Istanbul Esenler, Alibeyköy or Dudullu Bus Terminals: coaches operated by Pamukkale, Kamil Koç and Nilüfer depart every 20 minutes around the clock, crossing the Gulf of Izmit on the Osmangazi Bridge into Bursa Intercity Bus Terminal (Bursa Şehirlerarası Otobüs Terminali), located 10 km north of the centre and linked to Ulu Cami by Tram T2 or Express Bus 38.
  • Direct Coaches from Istanbul Airports (IST & SAW): official BBBUS (Burulaş) luxury white coaches run directly from outside arrivals at both Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW, 90 minutes) and Istanbul Airport (IST, 2 hours 45 mins) straight to Bursa Terminal every 30 to 60 minutes.
