Where to Stay in Bursa: Historic Centre (Heykel/Tophane), Çekirge and Uludağ

Choosing between walking-distance hotels by the Grand Mosque, mineral hot-spring resorts in Çekirge or Uludağ.

Choosing where to sleep in Bursa comes down to a simple question: do you want to step out of your hotel door straight into the 15th-century silk caravanserais and kebab shops of the historic centre, or do you want to end every afternoon soaking in a natural 45°C mineral thermal pool in the leafy western hills of Çekirge? Because the two districts sit just ten minutes apart by taxi or bus, both make effortless bases.

1. Historic Centre: Heykel, Tophane, Şehreküstü & Kayhan (Best for Walkability & First-Timers)

Stretching along the historic upper avenue of Atatürk Caddesi between Tophane (Saltanat Kapısı), Ulu Cami, Heykel and Setbaşı, and down to Şehreküstü (Osmangazi Metro Station). Staying here means you can walk in five minutes to Ulu Cami, Koza Han, the Irgandı Bridge, Tophane's sunset terrace and the original 1867 İskender kebab and pideli köfte restaurants, while Osmangazi Metro station connects you directly to Cumalıkızık, Mudanya and the Bus Terminal. Look for restored Ottoman mansion boutique hotels in the quiet cobbled lanes of Hisar (inside the Tophane citadel walls) or Reyhan/Kayhan, or modern mid-range city hotels around Kent Meydanı and Heykel.

2. Çekirge and Kükürtlü (Best for Thermal Spa Hotels, Parks & Valley Views)

Perched on a green hillside terrace 3 to 4 kilometres west of Ulu Cami directly above extensive Kültürpark and Merinos Park. Çekirge has been Bursa's spa and resort quarter since Byzantine and early Ottoman times. Almost every hotel here (from historic five-star landmarks like Çelik Palas, Kervansaray Thermal and Marigold to mid-range boutique thermal hotels) pipes natural, mineral-rich 44°C, 47°C geothermal spring water directly into its indoor/outdoor spa pools, Turkish hammams and often into private sunken marble bathtubs inside guest rooms.

3. Nilüfer, Odunluk and PodyumPark (Best for Business, Car Travellers & Modern Dining)

Six kilometres west of the historic core along BursaRay Metro Line 2 (around Nilüfer, Sur Yapı Marka and Odunluk). Wide boulevards, international five-star chain hotels with easy underground parking, and Bursa's liveliest contemporary restaurants and cocktail bars.

4. Mount Uludağ 1st and 2nd Hotel Zones (Best for Winter Ski Holidays)

At 1,800 metres elevation at the top of the Bursa Teleferik cable car; full-board ski-in/ski-out alpine resort hotels operating from mid-December through March.
