Best Time to Visit Çanakkale: April Anzac Commemorations, September Vintages and Weather

Matching your Çanakkale dates to spring battlefields, warm September island swimming and the Bozcaada grape harvest.

Lying at the meeting point of the Marmara and the northern Aegean, Çanakkale has a breezy Mediterranean climate where the steady north-easterly Poyraz wind keeps summer humidity low and the air fresh even in July and August. For combining the unshaded archaeological ruins of Troy and Assos with warm island swimming and outdoor dining, the two prime windows are late April to late June and September to late October.

Spring & The Historic Commemorations (March, April and May) is the most poignant season on the Dardanelles. Two major international commemorative dates take place on the Gallipoli Peninsula: 18 March (Naval Victory Day) and 24 to 25 April (Anzac Day Dawn Service and Turkish 57th Regiment Commemorations). If your dates cross mid-March or late April, book hotels in Çanakkale and Eceabat months in advance. By May, red wild poppies carpet the trenches of Conkbayırı and the ramparts of Ancient Troy under mild 22°C to 25°C skies.

High Summer (June, July and August) brings long, sunny, rainless days averaging 29°C to 32°C, noticeably cooler and breezier than Antalya or Izmir thanks to the Dardanelles wind. Notice one quirk of the northern Aegean: the turquoise water at Bozcaada's Ayazma Beach and Assos is famously brisk and invigorating (around 20°C to 22°C), making it the most refreshing swim in Turkey on a 32°C July afternoon. July and August are also peak season for fresh Dardanelles sardines grilled in vine leaves.

Early Autumn & The Bozcaada Grape Harvest (September and October) is many locals' favourite time of year. Winds calm down, the sea holds its summer warmth, and in the first two weeks of September Bozcaada stages its joyful Vineyard Harvest Festival (Bozcaada Bağbozumu Festivali), when tractors loaded with freshly picked Çavuş and Kuntra grapes parade to the castle and summer crowds thin out at Troy and Assos.

Winter (November to February) is chilly and windy (6°C to 12°C), though the indoor Troy Museum, Çimenlik Castle and the thermal springs of the Mount Ida foothills remain open all year. Check what to wear in Çanakkale before packing.
