Where to Stay in Çanakkale: Kordon Harbour, Bozcaada, Assos and Gallipoli

Choosing whether to base yourself on the Çanakkale Kordon, in a stone vineyard inn on Bozcaada or at Assos.

Because Çanakkale province stretches from the Dardanelles Strait in the north to the Gulf of Edremit in the south (a 90-minute drive from top to bottom), the smartest way to plan a 3- or 4-night trip is either to base yourself in downtown Çanakkale for the northern history, or to split your stay (2 nights in Çanakkale Town + 1 or 2 nights on Bozcaada or in Assos). Compare the five main bases below.

1. Central Çanakkale: İskele (Clock Tower), Kordon & Kemalpaşa (Best for First-Timers, Troy & Gallipoli)

Stretching along the flat Asian harbourfront between Çimenlik Castle, the Central Ferry Pier (İskele) and the northern end of the Kordon promenade. If you do not have a rental car, or if you want lively evening walks after full days at Gallipoli and Troy, stay right here: you are a 3-minute walk from the Eceabat/Kilitbahir ferries, surrounded by dozens of waterfront fish restaurants, historic peynir helvası bakeries and cafés, and 10 minutes from the Troy minibus stop. Look for sea-view rooms facing the strait along the Kordon or quiet boutique hotels tucked into the pedestrian lanes behind the Clock Tower.

2. Kepez & Dardanos (5 to 10 km south of the Harbour, Best for 5-Star Resorts, Car Parking & Beaches)

Ten minutes south of the ferry pier along the coastal road toward Troy. Here sit Çanakkale's large full-service five-star resort hotels (such as Kolin Hotel and DoubleTree by Hilton) with wide gardens, outdoor/indoor swimming pools, spa facilities, spacious car parks and direct access to the Troy highway without entering downtown one-way streets.

3. Bozcaada Island (Best for Wine, Stone Courtyards & Romantic Evenings)

Do not visit Bozcaada only as a rushed 4-hour midday trip if you can spare a night: the island is at its most atmospheric after the in the early evening ferry takes day-trippers back to the mainland, when lantern-lit tables fill the cobbled alleys of the Greek Quarter (Rum Mahallesi). Book a restored stone guesthouse in town or a quiet vineyard cottage (bağ evi) in the interior.

4. Assos (Behramkale) & Kadırga Bay (Best for Dramatic Aegean Views & Stone Architecture)

Sleep either high up inside the medieval stone village of Behramkale right below the Temple of Athena, or down at the foot of the volcanic cliff in one of the converted 19th-century stone acorn warehouses right on the water at the Assos Antique Harbour.

5. Eceabat & Alçıtepe (Best for Early Dawn Anzac Cove Visits)

Directly across the strait on the Gallipoli Peninsula; convenient simple guesthouses if you are attending the 25 April Anzac Dawn Service.
