Fishing Village and Oktyabrsky Island: River Quays, Synagogue and Philharmonic

Walk the Pregolya waterfront through Fishing Village, Honey Bridge, the New Synagogue, the Holy Family Philharmonic, and Oktyabrsky Island.

Directly across the narrow channel of the Pregolya River from Kant Island lies Oktyabrsky Island (historically Lomse), whose western riverbank forms Kaliningrad's most scenic pedestrian promenade. Built between 2006 and 2010 between Honey Bridge and High Bridge, the Fishing Village (Rybnaya Derevnya) complex recreates the gabled rooflines and half-timbered facades of pre-war East Prussian river quarters.

Fishing Village, Honey Bridge and Jubilee Bridge

Connecting Oktyabrsky Island to Kant Island at the northern end of the promenade, Honey Bridge (Medovy Most) traces its origins to 1542 and was rebuilt as a metal structure in 1882. Since 2018, its wrought-iron railing has held the miniature bronze figurine of Grandfather Karl, the first of Kaliningrad's homlin sculptures. Along the quay, the lighthouse-style Mayak viewing tower has a rooftop observation deck overlooking the cathedral spire and river boats.

At the southern end of the embankment, the three-span pedestrian Jubilee Bridge (Yubileyny Most) opened in 2005 for the city's 750th anniversary, standing on the supports of the 1905 Kaiserbrücke destroyed in 1945.

New Synagogue, Holy Family Philharmonic and Kaliningrad Stadium

  • New Synagogue: Facing Kant Island beside Fishing Village, the domed New Synagogue was rebuilt and consecrated in 2018 on the exact footprint of the 1896 New Liberal Synagogue burned during Kristallnacht in 1938.
  • Church of the Holy Family (Kaliningrad Regional Philharmonic): A short walk south of High Bridge at Bogdana Khmelnitskogo Street 61a/63a stands the red-brick neo-Gothic Church of the Holy Family, designed by Friedrich Heitmann and built between 1904 and 1907. Restored by architect Pavel Gorbach, it opened in August 1980 as the philharmonic concert hall and houses a 3,600-pipe, 44-register Czech organ installed in 1982.
  • Kaliningrad Stadium (Rostec Arena): Further east on Oktyabrsky Island, the 35,000-seat stadium opened on 11 April 2018 and hosted four group-stage matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Because of its central waterfront setting, Fishing Village is also one of the best areas in our where to stay in Kaliningrad guide.
