Zelenogradsk, Svetlogorsk and Yantarny: Baltic Resorts, Water Towers and Amber Coast
Ride coastal trains from Kaliningrad to Zelenogradsk's cat-themed promenade, Svetlogorsk's 1908 Water Tower, Yantarny's Blue Flag beach, and Baltiysk.
Within an hour of central Kaliningrad via electrified Lastochka trains or regional buses, the Sambian Peninsula opens onto pine-fringed Baltic cliffs, sandy beaches, and historic Prussian spa towns. Each coastal town offers a distinct atmosphere and can be visited as a half-day or full-day trip using our getting around and transport tips.

Zelenogradsk (Historic Cranz)
Located 34 kilometres north of Kaliningrad at the base of the Curonian Spit, Zelenogradsk became a royal bathing resort in 1816 and was linked by rail to Königsberg on 8 July 1885. Visitors stroll the wide seafront promenade and 150-metre Baltic pier, admire Jugendstil facades along pedestrian Kurortny Prospekt, and climb the historic Water Tower (Saratovskaya Street 2a), which houses the Murarium cat museum.

Svetlogorsk (Historic Rauschen)
Perched on forested moraine hills 30 kilometres northwest of Kaliningrad, Svetlogorsk is the only Russian town in the international Cittaslow movement. Its architectural symbol on Oktyabrskaya Street 11 is the 25-metre Water Tower and mud-bath rotunda, built in 1907 to 1908 by architect Otto Walter Kuckuck in German National Romantic Jugendstil and adorned in 1978 with a sculpted sundial by Nikolai Frolov. Winding paths and a cable car descend 40 to 50 metres from the pine-shaded villas to the seafront promenade, Hermann Brachert's Nymph sculpture, and Nikolai Frolov's mosaic Zodiac sundial.
Yantarny (Palmnicken) and the Amber Coast
The settlement is home to the Primorsky open-cast quarry of the Kaliningrad Amber Combine, holding around 90 percent of the world's explored amber reserves (pair with the Amber Museum in Dohna Tower). Walk through Moritz Becker Park onto the 1,980-metre wooden boardwalk along Russia's first Blue Flag beach (awarded in 2016), and visit Frank Meisler's 2011 memorial to the January 1945 Palmnicken death march.
Baltiysk (Pillau) and the Vistula Spit
Located 50 kilometres west of Kaliningrad on the Strait of Baltiysk, Russia's westernmost town (granted town rights on 18 January 1725) features the pentagonal star-shaped Pillau Citadel founded by Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus in 1626, the 31.38-metre lighthouse (1813 to 1816) beside the statue of Peter the Great, the Naval Cathedral of St. George, and ferries to the Russian section of the Vistula Spit.
