Amalienau Villas and Kaliningrad Zoo: Jugendstil Streets and Central Park

Walk the curved tree-lined avenues of the 1901 Amalienau garden suburb, see Queen Louise Memorial Church, and visit the 1896 Kaliningrad Zoo.

West of Victory Square between Prospekt Mira and Prospekt Pobedy lies Amalienau, the best-preserved pre-war residential quarter in Kaliningrad. Developed between 1901 and 1920 by the Königsberger Immobilien- und Baugesellschaft (founded in 1898 by architects Friedrich Heitmann and Joseph Kretschmann), the suburb followed English garden-city principles: winding, tree-shaded avenues meeting at small round ponds, strict rules limiting villas to two storeys plus an attic, and generous 30 to 35-metre spacing between houses.

Self-Guided Walk Through Amalienau's Villas

  1. Kutuzova Street (former Körteallee): Start along this chestnut-lined avenue to admire Villa Makowski (Kutuzova 7, built in 1905) and the ornate facades of Villa Brostowski (Kutuzova 28).
  2. Prospekt Pobedy (former Lawsker Allee): Turn west onto Prospekt Pobedy to see two of Heitmann's romantic rural-style landmarks side by side: Villa Schmidt (Prospekt Pobedy 24, built in 1903 with decorative half-timbering) and Villa Leo (Prospekt Pobedy 26, built in 1902).
  3. Kashtanovaya Alleya and Borodinskaya Street: Continue along Kashtanovaya Alleya past Villa Krohne (nos. 26 to 28, built in 1906) and Villa Stinski (Borodinskaya 13, 1906), ending at the red-brick neo-Gothic St. Adalbert's Chapel (1902).

Queen Louise Memorial Church and Central Park

At the eastern edge of Amalienau (Prospekt Pobedy 1) inside Central Park (the former Luisenwahl estate) stands Queen Louise Memorial Church, built from 1899 to 1901 by Friedrich Heitmann in neo-Romanesque and Jugendstil forms. Restored in the 1970s, the church now houses the Kaliningrad Regional Puppet Theatre.

Kaliningrad Zoo (Founded 1896)

A short walk east along Prospekt Mira brings you to the 16.5-hectare Kaliningrad Zoo, founded on 21 May 1896 by Hermann Claass and Professor Maximilian Braun on the grounds of the 1895 Northeast German Industrial and Crafts Exhibition. One of Russia's three oldest historic zoos alongside Moscow (1864) and Saint Petersburg (1865), it is famous for Hans the hippopotamus, nursed back to health after the April 1945 siege. Check the official zoo website for seasonal visiting hours.
