Victory Square, Christ the Saviour Cathedral and the Stock Exchange

Explore Kaliningrad's central plaza on Victory Square, the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Castle Hill, and the 1875 Stock Exchange.

Kaliningrad's commercial and civic life converges along the axis linking Victory Square (Ploshchad Pobedy) in the north with the Pregolya River bridges in the south via Leninsky Prospekt. Walking this route reveals how Weimar-era Expressionism, nineteenth-century Neo-Renaissance trade halls, and post-Soviet Orthodox architecture coexist in the city centre.

Victory Square and Hanns Hopp's City Hall

Known as Hansaplatz until 1934, Victory Square was reshaped in the 1920s after the demolition of the inner ramparts. At Victory Square 1 stands Kaliningrad City Hall (originally the Handelshof exhibition and office complex), built in 1923 by pioneering architect Hanns Hopp. Across the plaza rise the 1929 facades of the former Nordbahnhof (beside North Railway Station) and the Triumphal Column and fountains installed in 2005 for the 750th anniversary.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

Dominating the eastern side of Victory Square is the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the largest Orthodox church in Kaliningrad Oblast. Designed by architect Oleg Kopylov in the white-stone Vladimir-Suzdal style, the six-domed sanctuary rises about 70 metres, holds up to 3,000 worshippers, and carries 13 bells. Following the 1995 cornerstone laying and a June 1996 capsule containing soil from Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour placed by President Boris Yeltsin and Metropolitan Kirill, the upper church was consecrated on 10 September 2006 by Patriarch Alexy II. A lower church beneath the main sanctuary was consecrated in 2007.

Castle Hill and the 1875 Königsberg Stock Exchange

South down Leninsky Prospekt lies the site of the 1255 Königsberg Castle, whose ruins were demolished between 1967 and 1969, and the adjacent 21-storey Brutalist House of Soviets (begun in 1970, halted in 1985, and dismantled between May 2023 and August 2024). Crossing the river to Leninsky Prospekt 83 brings you to the former Königsberg Stock Exchange, built from 1870 to 1875 by Bremen architect Heinrich Müller on 2,202 timber piles 12 to 18 metres long. Measuring 73 metres long and 23 metres wide and guarded by two stone lions carved by Emil Hundrieser, the building now houses the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of Fine Arts opposite Kant Island.
