Kaliningrad
Brick Gothic Königsberg Cathedral on Kant Island, historic Prussian city gates, amber-rich Baltic beaches, and the windswept dunes of the Curonian Spit.
Quick decisions
How many days?
Three to four days: two full days for Kant Island, the Museum of the World Ocean, Dohna Tower, the city gates, and Amalienau, plus one or two days for the Curonian Spit, Zelenogradsk, Svetlogorsk, and Yantarny.
Where should I stay?
Stay around Fishing Village and Oktyabrsky Island for river views beside Kant Island, near Victory Square and North Station for fast coastal train links, or in leafy Amalienau for quiet villa streets.
Do I need a car?
Not for the city or the main seaside resorts: trams, buses, and Lastochka trains from North and South stations reach Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk easily, while buses and tours serve the Curonian Spit and Yantarny.
Best for
Layered Prussian and Soviet history, Brick Gothic and Jugendstil architecture, maritime museums, Baltic amber collections, and coastal dune landscapes.
Before you go
Bring a windproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone gates and sandy spit trails, and check official museum and concert hall schedules in advance.
Getting around
Walk between Kant Island, Fishing Village, and the Museum of the World Ocean, ride Tram 5 between Victory Square, Amalienau, and Oktyabrskaya Street, and board Lastochka trains at Severny Station for the coast.

Overview
Positioned on the Pregolya River near the Vistula Lagoon, cut off from the Russian mainland between Poland and Lithuania, Kaliningrad is the administrative centre of Kaliningrad Oblast, an exclave covering 15,125 square kilometres. Founded on 1 September 1255 by the Teutonic Knights under Grand Master Poppo von Osterna on the site of the Old Prussian settlement of Twangste and named Königsberg in honour of King Ottokar II of Bohemia, the city grew from three medieval towns: Altstadt, granted town rights in 1286, Löbenicht in 1300, and the island of Kneiphof in 1327. King Frederick William I merged the three towns into a single municipality on 13 June 1724.
After the secularisation of the Teutonic Order in 1525 under Albert of Brandenburg, Königsberg served as capital of the Duchy of Prussia, seat of the Albertina University founded in 1544, and coronation city of Prussian kings Frederick I in 1701 and William I in 1861. Heavily damaged during British Royal Air Force night raids in August 1944 and the Soviet siege of 6 to 9 April 1945, the city was placed under Soviet administration by the Potsdam Agreement on 1 August 1945 and renamed Kaliningrad on 4 July 1946. Today travellers explore Brick Gothic Königsberg Cathedral on Kant Island, nineteenth-century brick fortifications at the Amber Museum in Dohna Tower, and the UNESCO-listed dunes of the Curonian Spit.
Getting there
Khrabrovo Airport (KGD) lies 24 kilometres northeast of central Kaliningrad and is linked to Victory Square, the Main Bus Station, and South Railway Station by express bus No. 244э. Long-distance trains arrive at the 1929 Kaliningrad-Passazhirsky (South Station), while electrified Lastochka commuter trains and regional buses connect both South Station and central Kaliningrad-Severny (North Station) with the Baltic resorts of Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk. Inside the city, metre-gauge trams on Lines 3 and 5 link the Pregolya bridges with Victory Square and Amalienau.
Where to stay
Stay along the Pregolya River in Fishing Village and Oktyabrsky Island for direct pedestrian access across Honey Bridge to Kant Island, around Victory Square and North Station for shopping and fast Lastochka trains to the Baltic coast, or in the garden-city villa quarter of Amalienau. In summer, many travellers split their stay between central Kaliningrad and the seaside promenades of Zelenogradsk, Svetlogorsk, or Yantarny.
Things to do
Cross the 1542 Honey Bridge to the 10-hectare Kant Island to see the fourteenth-century Königsberg Cathedral and Immanuel Kant's 1924 tomb colonnade, climb the 33-metre Mayak viewing tower in Fishing Village, and board the 1939 research ship Vityaz and submarine B-413 at the Museum of the World Ocean. Follow the nineteenth-century defensive ring from the Amber Museum in Dohna Tower and Upper Pond to King's Gate, Brandenburg Gate, and Fort No. 5, then take a day trip to Efa Dune and the 1961 Dancing Forest on the Curonian Spit.
Food and drink
Local food in Kaliningrad brings together eighteenth-century East Prussian recipes and Baltic seafood: order poached Königsberger Klopse meatballs in creamy caper sauce with beetroot, crispy pan-fried Baltic sprat, smoked Curonian Lagoon eel, and shaved frozen pelamida stroganina, then finish with flame-toasted Königsberger Marzipan at the Brandenburg Gate Marzipan Museum.
Culture
Layered with seven centuries of Teutonic, Prussian, and Russian history, Kaliningrad preserves the memory of philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724 to 1804) alongside organ concerts inside the restored Königsberg Cathedral and the 1907 neo-Gothic Church of the Holy Family (now the Regional Philharmonic). Across the oblast, the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of Fine Arts occupies the 1875 Neo-Renaissance Stock Exchange, while the coastal towns showcase early twentieth-century German National Romantic and Jugendstil spa architecture.
