Manaus 3-Day Itinerary: Belle Époque Heritage, Two Rivers & Rainforest Canopy
Follow our day-by-day 3-day Manaus itinerary covering Teatro Amazonas, the Meeting of Waters, MUSA canopy tower, INPA manatees, and Rio Negro beaches.
Three full days in Manaus give you time to experience its nineteenth-century Rubber Boom landmarks, cross the dramatic two-toned confluence of the Amazon's parent rivers, climb above an untouched primary rainforest canopy at dawn, and swim off a white-sand Rio Negro beach. Wear light linen or cotton clothing and start each morning early when tropical temperatures are freshest and birds are most active.

Day 1: Riverfront Markets, Floating Piers & Teatro Amazonas
- Morning at Mercado Adolpho Lisboa & Porto de Manaus: Start at 08:00 at the 1883 cast-iron Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa to browse stalls of aromatic priprioca roots, cassava flour, and fresh Amazonian river fish. Step onto the adjacent 1902 floating roadway piers of Porto de Manaus to watch wooden regional boats loading hammocks and fruit, then walk up to the 1903 Palácio Rio Negro, once the residence of German rubber magnate Waldemar Scholz.
- Afternoon at Largo de São Sebastião: Enjoy a lunch of charcoal-grilled costela de tambaqui near the square before joining a guided tour of Teatro Amazonas and the neighbouring 1900 Palácio da Justiça.
- Evening Tacacá on the Square: As the heat softens at dusk, pull up a chair on the black-and-white wave stones of Largo de São Sebastião to sample a gourd of steaming tacacá with jambu leaves while watching street performers beneath the illuminated pink facade of the opera house.

Day 2: Encontro das Águas, Janauari Water Lilies & Ponta Negra Sunset
- Morning Boat Excursion to the Meeting of Waters: Depart from the downtown dock or Ceasa Port across the sharp six-kilometre line of the Encontro das Águas, Dip your hand into the water to feel the six-degree difference between the warm, dark Rio Negro and the cool, silty Rio Solimões.
- Midday at Janauari Ecological Park: Continue by motorised canoe into the flooded channels of Lake Janauari to walk elevated timber boardwalks above giant Victoria amazonica water lilies and eat fresh pirarucu at a floating river house.
- Late Afternoon at Ponta Negra: Return to the city and take an Uber west to the palm-lined Ponta Negra promenade for sunset views across the wide Rio Negro.

Day 3 Morning: Sunrise Canopy Birding at MUSA
- Dawn at the 42-Metre MUSA Tower: Arrive at the Museu da Amazônia (MUSA) on the northern edge of the city for the early morning climb up its 242-step steel tower, when toucans, parrots, and Spangled Cotingas feed in the emergent treetops of the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, then walk the forest floor trails past orchid houses and giant arapaima tanks.
Day 3 Afternoon: INPA Manatees or Praia da Lua
- Afternoon Choice: Visit INPA Bosque da Ciência to see rescued Amazonian manatees and giant otters, or hop on a ten-minute speedboat from Marina do Davi to swim off the white sands of Praia da Lua. If you have a fourth day, drive north to the waterfalls of Presidente Figueiredo or west to Novo Airão and Anavilhanas.
