Best Time to Visit Medellín: Eternal Spring Climate and Feria de las Flores

Month-by-month weather guide to Medellín using official 1991-2020 IDEAM climate normals, comparing the December-February and June-August dry seasons and August's Feria de las Flores.

Sitting six degrees north of the equator at an altitude of 1,495 metres, Medellín earns its nickname "The City of Eternal Spring" with remarkable consistency. According to official 1991 to 2020 IDEAM climate normals recorded at Olaya Herrera station, average afternoon highs stay within a narrow band of 27.0°C to 28.4°C across all twelve months, while overnight lows rest between 17.0°C and 17.8°C. Rather than winter and summer, your trip timing depends on the bimodal Andean rainfall cycle and two famous cultural seasons.

December to February and June to August: The Two Drier Seasons

For the sunniest skies on hillside cable cars and day trips to Guatapé, aim for Medellín's two drier windows (veranos):

  • December to February: The driest stretch of the year, averaging 11 to 14 rain days per month and afternoon highs of 27.4°C to 28.2°C. From early December through early January, the city illuminates more than 25 million LED lights along the Medellín River and Parques del Río for its world-famous Alumbrados Navideños Christmas display.
  • June to August: The mid-year dry window brings warm 28.0°C to 28.4°C afternoons and 14 to 16 rain days per month (usually brief late-afternoon showers that clear quickly), ideal for hiking in the cool 18°C pine and oak forests of Parque Arví.

Early August: La Feria de las Flores (Festival of the Flowers)

Celebrated over ten days every early August since 1 May 1957, the Feria de las Flores is Antioquia's most important cultural festival. Highlights include the National Trova Festival (improvised musical verse duels), the classic and antique car parade, open-air orchid exhibitions inside the Jardín Botánico Orquideorama, and the closing Desfile de Silleteros, when more than 500 flower farmers from Santa Elena march down the avenue carrying wooden chair-frames (silletas) weighing up to 70 kilograms, woven with tens of thousands of fresh chrysanthemums, orchids, carnations, and gladioluses. Book hotels in El Poblado or Laureles at least three months ahead for early August.

April to May and September to November: The Green Rainy Seasons

During the two Andean wet seasons (inviernos) of April to May (20 to 21 rain days) and September to November (18 to 22 rain days, peaking in October), mornings often start bright and warm before tropical downpours arrive in the mid-to-late afternoon. Schedule outdoor walks at Comuna 13 for 08:30 and save afternoons for the Museo de Antioquia and specialty coffee tastings.
