Metrocable, Parque Arví and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Guide
Ride Medellín's pioneering Metrocable Line K and Line L over the eastern rim of the Aburrá Valley into the 16,000-hectare high-Andean cloud forest of Parque Arví and the flower farms of Santa Elena.
Nowhere is the dramatic geography of the Aburrá Valley clearer than on the two-stage aerial gondola ascent from northeastern Medellín into the cool, mist-wrapped highland plateau of Santa Elena. In less than 35 minutes, you rise from 1,450 metres on the urban valley floor to 2,450 metres (8,038 feet) inside the 16,000-hectare Parque Regional Ecoturístico Arví, trading tropical city warmth for crisp 17°C mountain air scented with pine, eucalyptus, and wild orchids.

Stage 1: Metrocable Line K to Santo Domingo Savio (2004)
Your journey begins on Metro Line A heading north to Acevedo Station. Without leaving the fare gates, follow the signs up to Metrocable Line K, which opened on 7 August 2004 as the first aerial gondola line in the world engineered specifically as a high-capacity urban mass-transit commuter line rather than a ski lift or tourist ride.
Over a 2.07-kilometre climb past Andalucía and Popular stations to Santo Domingo Savio (at 1,850 metres elevation), your eight-passenger cabin glides smoothly over steep ravines, rooftop football pitches, and community parks that once required two hours of bus transfers to reach downtown.

Stage 2: Metrocable Line L into Parque Arví (2010)
At Santo Domingo Savio, step across the platform to purchase the separate ecological ticket for Metrocable Line L (Cable Arví), inaugurated in February 2010. For 4.6 kilometres (a 15-minute silent flight with no intermediate stops), the gondola climbs straight up the vertical eastern wall of the Aburrá Valley, crests the mountain ridge with a sweeping backwards panorama of the entire city of Medellín, and glides for miles just above the treetops of the cloud forest to Arví Station.
- Weekly Maintenance Schedule: Remember that while commuter Line K operates every day of the year, tourist Line L to Parque Arví is closed every Monday for routine cable maintenance (or on Tuesday whenever Monday is a Colombian public holiday).
- Trails and Mercado Arví: Right outside the terminal, peasant artisans from Santa Elena sell organic blackberry wine, honey, and handwoven crafts at the open-air Mercado Arví. From the visitor centre, certified ecological guides lead walks along ancient stone-paved Indigenous and colonial mule paths such as the Camino Cieza de León (named after the Spanish chronicler who crossed the ridge in 1541), passing carnivorous plants, giant tree ferns, bromeliads, and turquoise highland streams.

Visiting a Traditional Finca Silletera in Santa Elena
From the Parque Arví station plaza, local green rural buses and taxis drive 10 minutes into the surrounding rural veredas of Santa Elena, the ancestral homeland of the silleteros whose floral creations star in August's Feria de las Flores. Several multi-generational family flower farms (fincas silleteras) welcome visitors year-round to walk through fields of dahlias, asters, and immortelles, learn how different types of silletas (monumental, emblematic, traditional) are woven by hand, and warm up beside a wood stove with hot chocolate and arepa de chocolo con quesito.
