Medellín
Cradled at 1,495 metres in the Aburrá Valley of the Central Andes, Medellín is Colombia's City of Eternal Spring, where Fernando Botero's monumental bronzes, hillside Metrocable gondolas, Comuna 13's outdoor escalators and murals, and lush cloud-forest trails meet.
Quick decisions
- How many days? Plan 3 to 4 full days: two days for Plaza Botero, Comuna 13, the Metrocable to Parque Arví, and the Botanical Garden, plus a full day for Guatapé and Piedra del Peñol or colonial Santa Fe de Antioquia.
- Where should I stay? Stay in leafy El Poblado (Provenza or Barrio Manila) for tree-canopied dining streets and boutique hotels, or choose flat, circular Laureles for neighbourhood cafés, salsa bars, and walkable parks.
- Do I need a car? No. Medellín has Colombia's only rail Metro system, seamlessly connected to six aerial Metrocable gondola lines, the Ayacucho Tram, and regulated taxis.
- Best for: Sculpture and modern art, urban transformation, aerial cable cars, specialty Antioquian coffee, botanical gardens, and Andean lake and colonial day trips.
- Before you go: Buy a reusable Cívica transit card at a major Metro station to ride the Metro, Metrocable, and tram, and bring a light rain jacket for afternoon tropical showers.
- Getting around: Metro Line A runs north to south along the Medellín River, connecting at San Antonio with Line B (for Comuna 13) and the Ayacucho Tram, and at Acevedo with Metrocable Line K and Line L to Parque Arví.
- Continue your trip: Pair Medellín with high-Andean museums in Bogotá or fly north to the Caribbean walls and islands of Cartagena.
Overview
Cradled at 1,495 metres (4,905 feet) inside the green corridor of the Aburrá Valley in the Central Andes, Medellín is the capital of Antioquia and Colombia's second-largest city. First settled by Francisco Herrera Campuzano in 1616 and officially founded by Royal Decree on 2 November 1675, the City of Eternal Spring is celebrated worldwide for its innovative social urbanism, integrating hillside neighbourhoods via aerial Metrocable gondolas, outdoor escalators, botanical gardens, and public sculpture plazas.
Getting there
International and mainline domestic flights arrive at José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) in Rionegro, connected to El Poblado in 30 to 40 minutes via the 8.2-kilometre Túnel de Oriente, while regional turboprops use Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH) inside the valley.
Where to stay
Stay in southeastern El Poblado around pedestrianised Carrera 35 in Provenza or walkable Barrio Manila for boutique hotels and contemporary dining, or choose flat, circular Laureles west of the river for tree-shaded avenues and local cafés.
Things to do
Walk among 23 monumental Fernando Botero bronzes at Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia, ride the 384-metre outdoor electric escalators of Comuna 13, glide on Metrocable Line K and Line L into the 16,000-hectare cloud forest of Parque Arví, admire the 2006 timber Orquideorama inside the Jardín Botánico, and take day trips to the 740 steps of Piedra del Peñol and Guatapé or 1541 colonial Santa Fe de Antioquia.
Food and drink
Feast on Antioquia's signature ten-ingredient Bandeja Paisa with slow-cooked red beans and crispy chicharrón, warm up with mondongo soup, start the morning with golden fried cheese buñuelos and arepa de chocolo con quesito, and taste single-origin high-altitude Antioquian Arabica coffee in Provenza and Laureles.
Culture
Proud of its Paisa mountain heritage, Medellín blends traditional arriero (muleteer) hospitality and August's floral Feria de las Flores parade of silleteros with contemporary architecture, tango, salsa, and community hip-hop.
