Parque Rodo, Punta Carretas Lighthouse and Playa de los Pocitos

Explore Montevideo's favourite coastal neighbourhoods: the lake and National Museum of Visual Arts in Parque Rodo, Castillo Pittamiglio and the 1876 lighthouse in Punta Carretas, and Pocitos Beach.

Where Rambla Republica Argentina curves south past the Mercosur headquarters (housed inside the grand 1909 former Parque Hotel), Montevideo opens into its three most popular coastal districts for outdoor leisure, art museums, and beach life: Parque Rodo, the rocky southern cape of Punta Carretas, and the crescent bay of Pocitos. Many travellers also choose this coastline as their base; see our where to stay in Montevideo guide for hotel recommendations.

Parque Rodo Lake and Miniature Castle

Named in honour of Uruguayan modernist essayist Jose Enrique Rodo (1871 to 1917, author of Ariel), Parque Rodo spans 43 hectares of French-designed gardens rising inland from Playa Ramirez. At the northern end of the park, an artificial boating lake surrounds a miniature turret-topped castle housing the Maria Stagnero de Munar municipal children's library, while Sunday mornings bring a sprawling open-air street market along Calle Tristan Narvaja and the park lanes.

Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales (MNAV)

On the eastern edge of the park at Avenida Tomas Giribalde 2283 stands the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales (MNAV), founded in 1911 and redesigned in the 1960s by Argentine modernist architect Clorindo Testa. Its galleries hold the definitive collection of Uruguayan fine art, including historical canvases by Juan Manuel Blanes, expressive candombe and gaucho scenes by Pedro Figari, vibrationist portraits by Rafael Barradas, and Constructivist works by Joaquin Torres-Garcia.

Castillo Pittamiglio on Rambla Gandhi

Overlooking the sea between Parque Rodo and Punta Carretas stands the eccentric red-brick labyrinth built between 1911 and 1966 by architect, engineer, and alchemist Humberto Pittamiglio. Crowned by a winged victory statue of Samothrace resembling a ship's prow, its 54 rooms feature Templar symbols, blind doors, spiral staircases leading nowhere, and octagonal alchemy chambers.

The 1876 Punta Brava Lighthouse and Punta Carretas Shopping

  • Faro de Punta Brava (Punta Carretas Lighthouse): At the southernmost tip of Montevideo, where underwater rocks shaped like ox-carts (carretas) once wrecked colonial ships, the 21-metre conical Punta Brava Lighthouse (known affectionately as La Farola) has guided mariners since 1 October 1876.
  • Punta Carretas Shopping (Former 1915 Penitentiary): Four blocks inland on Calle Jose Ellauri, a monumental neoclassical stone archway marks the entrance to the former 1915 Punta Carretas Penitentiary (famous for the September 1971 tunnel escape of 111 Tupamaro prisoners), converted in 1994 into an upscale shopping and dining complex.

Playa de los Pocitos and the Montevideo Sign

Rounding the eastern corner of Punta Carretas brings you to Playa de los Pocitos, inaugurated in 1886 as a seaside bathing resort named after the freshwater wells (pocitos) that washerwomen dug into the clean sand. Today, a two-kilometre arc of fine white sand curves between high-rise apartment towers and beach volleyball courts to the rocky headland of Punta Trouville and Kibon Point, where the giant white MONTEVIDEO letters frame one of the city's best sunset views back across the bay.
