The Heart of Inland Naxos: Halki (Vallindras Kitron), Panagia Drosiani and Filoti

Sixteen kilometres inland from the beaches: neoclassical Halki, the 1896 Kitron distillery and the plane tree of Filoti.

Sixteen kilometres east of Naxos Town (25 minutes by car or KTEL Bus #2), the road climbs over a mountain pass and drops into the Tragia Valley (Livadi), a vast, emerald-green upland basin carpeted with hundreds of thousands of ancient olive trees, fig orchards, citrus groves and over thirty Byzantine frescoed churches. At the centre of the valley sit two of the most atmospheric villages in the Cyclades: aristocratic Halki (Chalkio) and amphitheatrical Filoti.

1. Halki (Chalkio): Neoclassical Mansions, Vallindras Kitron (1896) & Byzantine Walks

For centuries the commercial and administrative capital of inland Naxos, Halki is a jewel of terracotta-roofed neoclassical mansions, bougainvillea-draped marble courtyards and Venetian fortified tower-houses (led by the 17th-century Gratsia / Fragopoulos Tower):

  • The 1896 Vallindras Kitron Distillery (Free Tour & Tasting on the Main Square): step inside a time-capsule 19th-century room with original copper wood-fired stills where five generations of the Vallindras family have distilled PDO-protected Kitron Naxou, made not from the fruit, but by distilling the aromatic essential oils of fresh green Citron leaves (Citrus medica) harvested in autumn. Taste all three varieties: Yellow (strongest, 36% ABV with zero sugar), Clear (medium sweet, 33% ABV) and Green (sweetest and mildest, 30% ABV).
  • The 30-Minute Olive-Grove Walk to Agios Georgios Diasoritis (11th Century): follow the flat, stone-flagged footpath from Halki square through ancient olive trees for 10 minutes to the 11th-century cross-in-square church of Agios Georgios Diasoritis, preserving vivid 1050 AD Byzantine frescoes.

2. Panagia Drosiani (6th Century AD) & Filoti Village (At the Foot of Mount Zas)

  • Panagia Drosiani (3 km north of Halki on the road to Moni): one of the oldest Christian churches in all of Greece. Built of rough grey fieldstone in the 6th century AD with a trio of conical monastic domes, its interior domes preserve rare 6th- and 7th-century Paleochristian frescoes of a beardless young Christ alongside a medieval stone niche where village children were taught in secret during Ottoman tax raids.
  • Filoti (3 km south-east of Halki): the largest village in inland Naxos, cascading down twin hills beneath the 1718 Barozzi Tower and the 18th-century marble iconostasis of Panagia Filotitissa. Sit under the colossal, 100-year-old Platanos (plane tree) on the main square to taste local Arseniko cheese and slow-roasted lamb at traditional butcher-tavernas.
