Where to Stay in Naxos: Chora & Agios Georgios vs Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka
Deciding whether to stay in walkable Chora / St George Beach or right on the sand in Agios Prokopios or Plaka.
Naxos has one of the most visitor-friendly hotel layouts in the Cyclades: almost 90 percent of travellers stay along a single 8-kilometre coastal strip stretching from Naxos Town (Chora) south through Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka, all connected every 20 minutes by the #1 beach bus.
1. Naxos Town (Chora) & Agios Georgios / St George Beach (Best Overall Base for First-Timers & Families)
Unlike Mykonos (where the main town has no large sandy beach), Naxos Town merges seamlessly on its southern side into the 1-kilometre sandy bay of Agios Georgios (Saint George Beach). Staying in the southern quarter of Chora or behind Agios Georgios Beach gives you every advantage at once:
- Zero Car or Night-Bus Needed: you walk 3 minutes to the beach for a morning swim, walk 10 minutes to the Portara for sunset, stroll into the Venetian Kastro and Old Market for dinner every evening, and walk to the central KTEL Bus Station in 8 minutes to hop out to Plaka or Halki. (For quiet sunset views over the Portara and Paros, also look at boutique hotels on the northern hill of Grotta and Stelida).
2. Agios Prokopios & Agia Anna (5 to 6 km South of Chora, Best for Pure Beachfront Village Vibe)
If your top priority is waking up 30 metres from neon-turquoise water and crystalline golden sand while still having 20 seaside tavernas, beach cafés, bakeries and a pharmacy outside your door, book in Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna. The #1 KTEL bus takes you into Chora in 12 minutes whenever you want an evening in the castle.
3. Plaka, Mikri Vigla & Kastraki (8 to 14 km South, Best for Quiet Dunes, Villas & Kitesurfing)
- Plaka Beach: low-rise whitewashed boutique hotels, suites with private plunge pools and boho beach restaurants set directly behind 4 kilometres of rolling golden sand dunes.
- Mikri Vigla & Kastraki: peaceful, uncrowded family studios and windsurfing/kitesurfing hotels.
