3 Days in Praia: The Plateau, UNESCO Cidade Velha, Serra Malagueta and Tarrafal
Three days combining Praia's colonial bluff and beaches with Cidade Velha and northern Santiago.
Three days based in Praia gives you the best of both worlds: an easygoing first day on foot around the capital's historic bluff and beaches, a half-day journey into fifteenth-century Atlantic history at Cidade Velha, and a full-day mountain-to-sea drive across the volcanic heart of Santiago Island. Check our practical briefing for EASE registration and cash tips before flying.
Day 1: The Plateau, Sucupira Market, Dona Maria Pia Lighthouse & Quebra Canela
- Morning: start on the Plateau (Platô) at shaded Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, visit the Pro-Cathedral and the Miradouro Diogo Gomes cliff viewpoint, then stroll pedestrian Rua 5 de Julho through the Mercado Municipal and the Ethnographic Museum.
- Late morning to lunch: walk down the steps from the western edge of the Plateau into the colourful lanes of Sucupira Market, then return upstairs for a midday plate of seared yellowfin tuna or cachupa rica.
- Afternoon to evening: ride five minutes south to the 1881 Farol de Dona Maria Pia lighthouse at Ponta Temerosa, swim at Prainha or Quebra Canela Beach, and finish with dinner and live acoustic morna music in Achada Santo António.
Day 2: UNESCO-Listed Cidade Velha (Fortaleza Real, Pelourinho & Ribeira Grande)
- Morning: take a twenty-minute taxi or aluguer 15 km west along the coast to Cidade Velha. Start at the top of the cliff inside the 1580s Fortaleza Real de São Filipe while the morning breeze is cool, then follow the cobbled footpath down into the green canyon of Ribeira Grande among mango, coconut and sugar-cane groves.
- Midday: walk historic cobbled Rua Banana to the 1495 Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, inspect the 1512 marble Pelourinho on the seaside square, and eat fresh grilled fish right by the black volcanic pebble beach.
- Late afternoon: return to Praia for a sunset drink overlooking the bay from a cliffside terrace on the Plateau.
Day 3: Highland Drive Across Serra Malagueta to Tarrafal Bay
- Early morning: set off north through the central mountains of Santiago via hired driver or aluguer, stopping at the botanical garden in São Jorge dos Órgãos, the 500-year-old giant kapok tree at Boa Entrada, and the highland market town of Assomada.
- Mid-morning: stretch your legs on a panoramic mountain viewpoint trail in Serra Malagueta Natural Park at 1,000 metres elevation.
- Afternoon: descend to the northern tip of the island to swim under the coconut palms of Tarrafal Bay, eat a beachside seafood lunch, and drive back to Praia along the scenic eastern coastal road via Pedra Badejo.
