Best Time to Visit Praia

Year-round 25-30°C island warmth, winter hiking breezes and autumn's emerald mountain valleys.

Sitting in the Atlantic Ocean at 15 degrees north latitude, Praia enjoys one of the most stable, sun-drenched climates anywhere in the world: daytime temperatures stay in a comfortable 25°C to 30°C window every single month of the year, and cooling northeast trade winds blow across the Plateau from November through June.

November to June (The Breezy Dry Season) brings virtually zero rainfall, crisp blue mornings and pleasant 25°C to 27°C afternoons. Following the brief late-summer rains of September, November and December are arguably the single best months for hiking in Serra Malagueta Natural Park and Ribeira Grande de Santiago, because the jagged volcanic valleys are still lush and green while the trails are dry and the air is fresh. Between January and March, dry Saharan bruma seca (Harmattan dust haze) can occasionally drift across the ocean for a few days at a time, softening the mountain views with a warm amber glow.

April and May (Cultural Festival Months) offer calm, warming ocean waters for swimming at Quebra Canela and Tarrafal, plus the archipelago's standout music gatherings in the capital: the Atlantic Music Expo (AME) and the Kriol Jazz Festival in April, which bring international and lusophone musicians to open-air stages on the Plateau, followed in mid-May by the legendary Festival da Gamboa on the beach below the cliffs celebrating Praia's municipal holiday.

August to October (The Warm Season / Tempo das Águas) brings the warmest ocean swimming temperatures (around 27°C) and the year's only brief tropical showers, mostly in August and September, which transform Santiago's dry brown hills into terraced emerald farmland of maize, beans and sugar cane within days. Even during the wettest weeks of September, rain typically falls in short passing bursts rather than all-day grey skies, leaving plenty of bright hours for walking the historic Plateau and coastal beaches. Check what to pack for both coastal sun and highland mist.
