The Plateau Historic Centre, Sucupira Market and Quebra Canela Beach
Exploring Praia's flat-topped colonial core, lively valley market and sheltered southern coves.
To understand Praia's layout, start on the Platô (Plateau), the flat basalt headland rising thirty metres above the harbour where Portuguese administrators relocated the island capital from malaria-prone Cidade Velha in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Because the bluff measures barely a kilometre long and four hundred metres wide, you can explore its entire historic grid on foot in a single morning.
Walking the Plateau: Rua 5 de Julho to the Diogo Gomes Lookout
Begin in the shaded heart of the upper town at Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, bordered by the neoclassical Paços do Concelho (City Hall), the cream-and-white Pro-Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graça and the Supreme Court, where locals read newspapers or play cards beneath the trees. Running north from the square is pedestrianized Rua 5 de Julho, lined with pastel-painted townhouses, pavement cafés, the Mercado Municipal (stacked with tropical papayas, fresh yellowfin tuna and local Fogo coffee) and the 1894 Ethnographic Museum. Walk two minutes south from the main square past the pink-and-white Palácio Presidencial to the cliff-edge balustrade of the Miradouro Diogo Gomes, where a statue of the fifteenth-century navigator looks out over Ilhéu de Santa Maria and the Atlantic horizon.
Down the Bluff: Sucupira Market, Dona Maria Pia Lighthouse and the Beaches
Descend the steps on the western flank of the Plateau into the valley floor to experience Mercado de Sucupira, Praia's energetic open-air bazaar where narrow covered alleys overflow with West African wax textiles, shoes, spices, acoustic strings and household goods right beside the island-wide aluguer minibus station. Afterward, take a five-minute taxi south to the wave-battered volcanic headland of Ponta Temerosa to photograph the white octagonal Farol de Dona Maria Pia (1881), then walk along the coastal promenade to swim or sip a cold drink at crescent-shaped Quebra Canela Beach or the quiet diplomatic cove of Prainha. Pair this route with an evening meal in neighbouring Achada Santo António.
