Praia
Cape Verde's bluff-top capital on Santiago Island, where pastel colonial squares on the Plateau overlook Atlantic coves, UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha and jagged volcanic peaks.
Quick decisions
How many days?
3 days: the Plateau historic ridge, Sucupira Market and Quebra Canela Beach on Day 1, UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha 15 km west on Day 2, and a full-island drive across Serra Malagueta to Tarrafal Bay on Day 3. Follow our three-day route.
Where should I stay?
The Plateau (Platô): walkable nineteenth-century plazas, pedestrian Rua 5 de Julho and cliffside terraces. Prainha and Quebra Canela: quiet diplomatic coves and oceanfront hotels. Achada Santo António: evening restaurants and live morna bars. Compare areas in our neighbourhood overview.
Do I need a car?
No. Praia's Plateau is ten minutes from end to end on foot, city taxis are plentiful, and shared aluguer minibuses or hired day drivers cover Cidade Velha, Assomada, Serra Malagueta and Tarrafal.
Best for
Creole culture and music: live evening morna, coladeira and funaná over slow-cooked cachupa. Atlantic history: the 1462 settlement of Cidade Velha. Volcanic hikes: Serra Malagueta ridges.
Before you go
EASE online pre-registration: visitors should complete Cape Verde's mandatory EASE airport security registration online at least five days before flying to Nelson Mandela Airport. Read our practical briefing.
Getting around
From Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI): the airport lies only 4 km northeast of the Plateau, a ten-minute taxi ride to central squares or Prainha beaches. Details in arrival and transport.
Continue your trip
Drive north through the volcanic spires of São Jorge dos Órgãos and Serra Malagueta to the palm-fringed beach of Tarrafal, or hop on a short inter-island flight or ferry to the crater island of Fogo, cultural Mindelo on São Vicente, or Sal and Boa Vista.
Overview
Perched atop a flat basalt mesa (the Platô) overlooking a crescent bay on the southern coast of Santiago Island, Praia is the political and Creole heart of the Cape Verde archipelago. Below its pastel nineteenth-century ministries and pedestrianized Rua 5 de Julho, steep stairways drop down to Sucupira Market and the sheltered Atlantic coves of Quebra Canela and Prainha.
Just 15 km west along the coast lies UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha, the oldest European colonial settlement in the tropics, while the interior of Santiago rises abruptly into the basalt needles of Pico da Antónia, Serra Malagueta Natural Park and the northern bay of Tarrafal. Pair island days with rich slow-simmered cachupa and live evening morna music, starting with our first-timer briefing.
Getting there
Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) sits on a plateau just 4 km northeast of central Praia, linking Santiago Island with Lisbon, Dakar, the Azores and inter-island hops across Cape Verde. Official taxis wait outside arrivals for the ten-minute ride into the Plateau, Achada Santo António or Prainha. For journeys to Cidade Velha, Assomada and Tarrafal, shared aluguer (hiace) minibuses depart from near Sucupira Market. See how to get to Praia.
Where to stay
Staying on the historic Plateau lets you step straight out onto pedestrian streets and cliff viewpoints, whereas coastal Prainha and Quebra Canela put you directly beside the Atlantic surf and modern hotel pools, right next to the restaurants of Achada Santo António. We compare the best districts in where to stay in Praia.
Things to do
Stroll from Alexandre Albuquerque Square to the cliffside Diogo Gomes Monument and Farol de Dona Maria Pia, explore the labyrinth of Sucupira Market, climb the royal fortress above UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha and hike through Serra Malagueta to Tarrafal Bay. See the top ten sights in things to do in Praia.
Food and drink
Cape Verdean cooking on Santiago Island centres on cachupa rica (hominy corn, beans, sweet potato, green banana, fish or pork slow-simmered for hours) and cachupa refogada (fried the next morning with a runny egg and local sausage), fresh grilled yellowfin tuna, whelk stew (búzio), goat cheese with papaya jam, and sugar-cane spirit (grogue and honey-laced ponche). Read where to eat in our Praia food and live music overview.
Culture
Out of all ten Cape Verdean islands, Santiago has the strongest West African roots, reflected in the lively rhythms of accordion-driven funaná and traditional batuque call-and-response drumming alongside soulful, UNESCO-listed morna ballads. The island's spirit is captured in the Creole philosophy of morabeza: unhurried warmth, kindness and hospitality toward strangers.
