Where to Stay in Praia: The Plateau, Prainha, Quebra Canela and Achada Santo António
Comparing Praia's bluff-top heritage centre with its sheltered diplomatic coves and dining hub.
Nearly all visitor accommodation in Praia clusters in two compact zones separated by a five-minute taxi ride: the historic colonial bluff of the Plateau (Platô) in the centre, and the coastal peninsula of Prainha, Quebra Canela and Achada Santo António immediately to the southwest.
1. The Plateau / Platô (Best for historic atmosphere, walkability and budget-to-boutique stays)
Perched atop the central basalt mesa around Praça Alexandre Albuquerque and pedestrian Rua 5 de Julho. Staying on the Plateau means you can step straight out of your doorway to morning coffee kiosks, the Municipal Market, the Ethnographic Museum and the Diogo Gomes cliff terrace without ever needing a taxi by day. Converted nineteenth-century townhouses and rooftop-terrace guesthouses offer high ceilings and authentic Creole character.
2. Prainha (Best for quiet oceanfront luxury, swimming coves and embassies)
Jutting into the Atlantic on a low rocky headland just south of the Plateau, Prainha is Praia's most exclusive diplomatic residential quarter. Here you will find the capital's top four-star cliffside and beachfront hotels with ocean-view swimming pools, private staircases down to the calm golden sand of Prainha cove, and peaceful streets beside the Farol de Dona Maria Pia lighthouse.
3. Quebra Canela and Gamboa Waterfront (Best for beach walks and sea-breeze terraces)
Curving between the foot of the Plateau and Prainha, the palm-lined bay of Quebra Canela puts you right opposite the ocean promenade, weekend beach volleyball, casual seafood grills and open-air sunset bars.
4. Achada Santo António (Best for modern apartment-hotels, restaurants and evening life)
Lying directly inland from Quebra Canela and Prainha on a flat grid of tree-lined avenues, Achada Santo António is where Praia's embassies, international organisations, bakeries and best contemporary dinner and live morna restaurants are concentrated. It is an ideal base if you want modern self-catering apartments or mid-range business hotels within a ten-minute walk of Quebra Canela Beach and easy taxi access to the airport.
