Cobbled Rua Banana lined with stone cottages and palm trees in UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha

UNESCO Cidade Velha, Serra Malagueta Natural Park and Tarrafal Bay

Discovering the 1462 birthplace of Cape Verde and driving north through volcanic peaks to Tarrafal.

While Praia's Plateau gives you the capital's urban pulse, the deeper story and dramatic mountain geography of Santiago Island begin fifteen minutes outside town. Two essential excursions (one a short coastal hop west, the other a full-day loop north through the volcanic interior) turn a stay in Praia into a complete island adventure.

Excursion 1: UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha (15 km west of Praia)

Founded in 1462 as Ribeira Grande at the mouth of a lush, watered canyon, Cidade Velha was the first permanent European colonial town built in the tropics and a pivotal transatlantic crossroads where Portuguese, West African and Atlantic histories fused into the world's first developed Creole culture (and where both Vasco da Gama in 1497 and Christopher Columbus in 1498 dropped anchor):

  • Fortaleza Real de São Filipe: start on the high basalt plateau above the canyon to walk the late-sixteenth-century volcanic-stone ramparts and cannons built after Sir Francis Drake sacked the town in 1585.
  • Pelourinho, Rua Banana and Nossa Senhora do Rosário: descend into the seaside village to see the 1512 white marble Pelourinho (Pillory) monument in the waterfront square, then stroll up cobbled Rua Banana (the oldest urbanized street in sub-Saharan Africa, lined with stone cottages) to the 1495 Manueline Gothic Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the evocative ruins of the sixteenth-century Sé Cathedral and Convent of São Francisco.

Excursion 2: Assomada, Serra Malagueta and Tarrafal Bay

Dedicate a full day to crossing the spine of Santiago Island via hired driver or aluguer. Climbing north out of Praia passes the jagged basalt peak of Pico da Antónia (1,394 m), the botanical garden at São Jorge dos Órgãos, the 500-year-old giant kapok tree (Poilão) in the Boa Entrada valley, and the highland market town of Assomada. The road then winds along the misty, pine-scented ridge of Serra Malagueta Natural Park (which has signposted mountain trails dropping into green valleys) before descending to Tarrafal at the northern tip of the island: a sheltered white-sand bay framed by coconut palms, painted wooden fishing boats and the historical museum at the former Tarrafal Camp (Campo do Tarrafal) at Chão Bom.
