What to Wear in Praia

Packing for sunny coastal walks in Praia and misty 1,000-metre volcanic trails inland.

Packing for Praia is wonderfully light, with one important twist: while the southern coastline around Quebra Canela and the Plateau feels like endless summer, the interior mountains of Santiago Island rise steeply past 1,000 metres into cool trade-wind clouds.

Coastal linen by day, smart casual for live music nights

For walking the Plateau, browsing Sucupira Market and relaxing by the water in Prainha or Tarrafal, pack light, breathable linen and cotton shirts, shorts, sundresses and swimwear. In the evenings, when locals gather along pedestrian Rua 5 de Julho or at the open-air restaurants and live morna music venues of Achada Santo António, people dress in neat, relaxed smart-casual summer wear (light trousers or a sundress with leather sandals).

Footwear and highland layers for Cidade Velha and Serra Malagueta

  • Grippy walking shoes or trail trainers: essential if you plan to hike the cobbled canyon trail down Ribeira Grande into Cidade Velha, climb the uneven stone ramparts of the Fortaleza Real de São Filipe, or walk the steep volcanic ridge paths of Serra Malagueta Natural Park. Smooth-soled flip-flops slip easily on basalt cobbles and loose volcanic gravel.
  • A light windbreaker or fleece jumper: between December and April, evening trade winds on the cliff edge of the Plateau and the high mountain pass at Serra Malagueta (where mist often rolls through the eucalyptus and pine trees at 1,000 metres) feel surprisingly cool.
  • Modest daytime coverage in markets and churches: carry a light cotton shirt or scarf when stepping inside the Pro-Cathedral on the Plateau or the 1495 church in Cidade Velha, and keep beachwear on the sand at Quebra Canela, Prainha and Tarrafal.
  • Sun protection and European plugs: pack a secure sunhat that will not blow off in the Atlantic breeze, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses and a standard European two-round-pin Type C / Type F plug adapter. Review seasonal weather before your trip.
