Best Time to Visit Recife & Olinda: Dry Reef Season, Carnival & Tide Tables
Month-by-month weather guide to Recife and Olinda using official 1991-2020 INMET normals: compare the sunny September-February dry season, Carnival, and winter rains.
Lying eight degrees south of the Equator along the Atlantic trade-wind belt, Recife and Olinda have a warm tropical monsoon climate (Köppen Am) where temperatures stay balmy all twelve months of the year. According to official 1991 to 2020 INMET climate normals, afternoon highs vary by only three degrees across the entire calendar, from 27.6°C in July to 30.7°C in February, while rainfall separates the year into a sun-drenched dry season and a greener winter rainy season.

September to February: The Sunny Dry Season (Best for Beaches & Reefs)
From September through February, rainfall drops sharply to between 45 and 126 millimetres per month (just 6 to 11 rain days, with October, November, and December being the driest months of the year):
- Crystal-Clear Reef Pools: With virtually no river runoff clouding the coast, the offshore coral and sandstone pools at Boa Viagem, Porto de Galinhas, and Praia dos Carneiros turn transparent turquoise, while daytime highs of 28.8°C to 30.7°C are cooled by steady ocean breezes.
- Why the Tide Table (Tábua de Marés) Matters More Than the Month: Regardless of which week you visit, plan your beach days around the lunar cycle. During the days around the new moon and full moon (maré de sizígia), daytime low tides drop to between 0.0 and 0.3 metres, exposing the outer reef walls and creating mirror-flat natural swimming pools; check the official Brazilian Navy (DHN) tide table for the Port of Recife and Suape before picking your Porto de Galinhas excursion day.

February or Early March: The Legendary Carnival of Recife and Olinda
Unlike stadium parades with ticketed grandstands or roped-off VIP zones, the Carnival of Recife and Olinda is 100 percent free, democratic street theatre. Highlights include the colossal Saturday morning Galo da Madrugada parade across the bridges of downtown Recife, brass orchestras playing UNESCO-listed Frevo as four-metre Bonecos Gigantes dance up the steep hills of Olinda, and the deeply moving Monday night Afro-Brazilian drum ceremony of the Noite dos Tambores Silenciosos in Recife Antigo.
April to August: The Atlantic Rainy Season & São João (June)
Heavier tropical showers arrive between April and July (18 to 22 rain days per month, highs of 27.6°C to 29.9°C). Even in the wetter months, mornings frequently bring bright intervals, and indoor treasures such as Instituto Ricardo Brennand, Paço do Frevo, Cais do Sertão, and the June Festas de São João (forró dances and corn feasts) shine.
