Porto de Galinhas & Praia dos Carneiros Day Trips Guide: Reefs, Jangadas & Palms
Plan a day trip south from Recife to Porto de Galinhas and Praia dos Carneiros: sail by jangada to natural coral reef pools, see Muro Alto, and visit the 18th-century beachfront chapel.
Beginning just forty-five minutes south of Recife International Airport (REC) along the southern coast of Pernambuco, the Costa dos Corais shelters two of the most famous tropical beaches in Brazil: the coral-reef village of Porto de Galinhas (60 kilometres south of Recife in Ipojuca) and the coconut-fringed estuary of Praia dos Carneiros (90 kilometres south in Tamandaré). Both can be visited easily as full-day excursions from Recife or Olinda.

1. Porto de Galinhas: Natural Coral Reef Pools & Jangada Sailboats
Once a nineteenth-century harbour for clandestine ships disguised behind crates of Guinea fowl (galinhas-d'angola, hence "Port of Chickens"), Porto de Galinhas is famous for the broad, flat coral-reef platform that sits just 200 metres off its main village beach:
- Sailing by Jangada to the Piscinas Naturais (Low Tide Only): Plan your arrival around the daily low tide (maré baixa, ideally between 0.0 and 0.4 metres). From the central beachfront kiosk, licensed local boatmen pole traditional triangular-sailed wooden rafts (jangadas) across the crystal-clear shallows in five minutes to designated ecological pathways atop the reef, where you step down into waist-deep turquoise coral pools surrounded by schools of striped sergeant-major fish (sargentinhos).
- Praia de Muro Alto & Pontal de Maracaípe: Directly north of the village, a three-kilometre-long vertical stone reef wall creates the mirror-calm, warm lagoon of Praia de Muro Alto. Directly south at Pontal de Maracaípe, where the Maracaípe River meets the ocean, flat-bottomed jangadas glide silently through mangrove channels to spot wild native seahorses (cavalos-marinhos) at sunset.

2. Praia dos Carneiros (Tamandaré) & the Beachfront Chapel of São Benedito
Thirty kilometres further south at the mouth of the Formoso River, Praia dos Carneiros offers five kilometres of leaning coconut groves, warm low-tide sandbars, and calm emerald water sheltered by an unbroken offshore reef wall:
- Capela de São Benedito (Igrejinha dos Carneiros): Built in the late eighteenth century in simple whitewashed masonry with forest-green doors and windows, this tiny colonial chapel stands directly on the sand beneath a canopy of coconut palms just metres from the high-tide line, making it one of the most photographed coastal landmarks in South America.
- Catamaran Rides on the Formoso River: Boat excursions along the estuary stop at the white sandbars inside the reef, the natural white-clay beach of Guadalupe, and the mangrove banks of the Formoso River; check local day-club or catamaran policies before arriving.

3. How to Organise Your Coastal Day Trip from Recife
To reach Porto de Galinhas independently in 60 minutes, take thePE-009 (Rota do Atlântico) toll highway by rental car, private transfer, or the air-conditioned Viação Cruzeiro Line 195 bus from Recife Antigo, Boa Viagem, or REC Airport. For Praia dos Carneiros (90 minutes from Recife), booking a door-to-door day-trip van or private driver is the smoothest option.
