Instituto Ricardo Brennand & Oficina Francisco Brennand Guide (Várzea, Recife)

Visit Recife's two extraordinary art estates in the forested Várzea district: the castle museum and Frans Post collection at Instituto Ricardo Brennand, and Oficina Cerâmica Francisco Brennand.

Fourteen kilometres west of Recife Antigo in the green residential and university district of Várzea, remnants of primary Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) shelter two of the most extraordinary cultural institutions in South America. Created on neighbouring tracts of the historic nineteenth-century Engenho São João sugarcane estate by two cousins from a prominent Pernambuco industrial family, Instituto Ricardo Brennand and the Oficina Cerâmica Francisco Brennand sit just ten minutes apart by car across the Capibaribe River and make an unforgettable half- or full-day pairing.

1. Instituto Ricardo Brennand (IRB, Opened 2002)

Approached along a majestic avenue of imperial palms and landscaped lakes, the Instituto Ricardo Brennand was founded in 2002 by industrialist and historian Ricardo Coimbra de Almeida Brennand (1927 to 2020) inside a complex of medieval-inspired red-brick buildings (**Castelo São João, Pinacoteca, Library, Galeria, and the Gothic Capela Nossa Senhora das Graças**):

  • The World's Largest Collection of Frans Post Paintings (Dutch Brazil): Inside the Pinacoteca, the permanent exhibition O Brasil Holandês displays the world's most comprehensive collection of seventeenth-century oil landscapes by Dutch Golden Age master Frans Post (1612 to 1680), who accompanied Count Johan Maurits of Nassau to Recife between 1637 and 1644 and became the first European artist to paint the landscapes, sugar mills, and rivers of the Americas from life, alongside rare 1647 folios by Caspar Barlaeus and portraits of Maurits of Nassau.
  • Castelo São João & the 3,000-Piece Armoury: Across the courtyard, the Tudor-Gothic castle houses one of the world's largest private collections of historical edged weapons and armour, including twenty-seven complete late-medieval and Renaissance suits of plate armour for knights, horses, and tournament jousting, plus centuries of European tapestries, Oriental ivories, and nineteenth-century French bronzes.

2. Oficina Cerâmica Francisco Brennand (Founded 1971)

On the opposite side of the forest preserve, visionary sculptor, ceramist, and painter Francisco de Paula Coimbra de Almeida Brennand (1927 to 2019) returned in 1971 to the ruined brick-and-tile kilns of his father's 1917 Cerâmica São João factory. Over nearly five decades, he transformed the 15-hectare woodland estate into a monumental, enigmatic open-air sanctuary containing more than 2,000 high-fired ceramic sculptures, totems, murals, and fountains:

  • Templo Central & Pátio das Esculturas: Walk through the vaulted brick halls of the old factory to the open-air courtyard, where rows of anthropomorphic ceramic columns guard the reflection pool of the Templo Central (centred on the primordial Ovo, or Cosmic Egg of Creation) and the Templo do Sacrifício.
  • Accademia, Anfiteatro & Estádio: Explore the neoclassical Accademia gallery (displaying hundreds of Francisco Brennand's paintings, sketchbooks, and botanical studies), the mosaic-tiled amphitheatre, and the peaceful café set beneath the factory chimneys.
