Recife Antigo Guide: Marco Zero, Rua do Bom Jesus & Kahal Zur Israel (1636)
Explore Recife Antigo (Bairro do Recife): stand at Marco Zero, cross to Francisco Brennand's Sculpture Park, walk Rua do Bom Jesus, and visit the 1636 Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue.
Occupying a narrow island strip between the confluence of the Capibaribe and Beberibe Rivers and the Atlantic reef wall, the Bairro do Recife, universally known as Recife Antigo, is the sixteenth-century birthplace of the city. Here Portuguese sugar ships loaded cargo in 1537, Dutch governor Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen fortified the port of New Holland between 1630 and 1654, and nineteenth-century eclectic facades today house Brazil's leading technology park (Porto Digital), Carnival museums, and waterfront cafés.

Historical Context of the Port Island
Connected to Santo Antônio Island by the Maurício de Nassau and Buarque de Macedo bridges, the entire historic port district can be explored comfortably on foot in a single morning or afternoon.
1. Praça Rio Branco (Marco Zero) & Parque das Esculturas
Every walk in Recife Antigo begins at Praça Rio Branco, the Marco Zero (Kilometre Zero) of Pernambuco:
- Cícero Dias Wind-Rose Mosaic (1999): The circular harbour square is paved with a 100-metre-wide polychrome stone mosaic designed by modernist Pernambuco painter Cícero Dias, inspired by his 1920s canvas "Eu vi o mundo… ele começava no Recife". Framing the square stand the 1912 former Bank of London and the restored port warehouses (Armazéns do Porto), now lined with riverfront restaurants.
- Parque das Esculturas Francisco Brennand (2000): Directly across the harbour channel atop the natural stone breakwater stands an open-air sculpture park by Francisco Brennand, centred on the 32-metre-tall bronze-and-ceramic Torre de Cristal flanked by ninety bronze sculptures. Small wooden rowboats ferry visitors across from the Marco Zero steps in three minutes.

2. Rua do Bom Jesus & Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel (1636)
Leading north from Marco Zero under royal palms, cobblestone Rua do Bom Jesus is the oldest street in Recife:
- Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel (Rua do Bom Jesus 197): Under the religious tolerance proclaimed in Dutch Brazil, Sephardic Jews founded the congregation of Kahal Zur Israel ("Rock of Israel") here in 1636, making it the first synagogue in the Americas. Today, the restored building houses a heritage museum where glass walkways reveal the excavated seventeenth-century stone mikveh (ritual bath); when the Dutch left Recife in 1654, twenty-three members sailed north to establish the first Jewish community in New Amsterdam (New York). Check the official museum page for visiting days.
- Embaixada dos Bonecos Gigantes: At number 183, step inside the Embassy of the Giant Puppets to see dozens of four-metre papier-mâché Carnival figures, and browse the open-air Sunday street market.

3. Praça do Arsenal, Paço do Frevo & Torre Malakoff
At the northern end of Rua do Bom Jesus, the leafy square of Praça Artur Oscar (Praça do Arsenal da Marinha) brings together the 1855 Torre Malakoff (a Crimean War-era naval gatehouse and astronomical observatory) and the four-storey Paço do Frevo and nearby Cais do Sertão.
4. Practical Walking Tips for Recife Antigo
Visit on a weekday morning for museum tours, or come on a Sunday afternoon when the streets close to cars for cyclists and the Rua do Bom Jesus market.
