Oia Sunset Guide: Where to Watch and How to Beat the Crowds

Short answer: it's beautiful, it's crowded, and you'll enjoy it far more with a plan. Arrive at least an hour before sunset, know where you're going to stand, and have a plan for getting home.

The reason Oia gets the famous sunset is geography. It's at the northern tip of the island, facing west with open sea in front of it, so the sun drops straight into the water beyond Thirassia instead of behind a cliff. The white houses and blue domes below catch the orange light. Around a thousand phones go up at once, and when the sun disappears people clap.

Where should we stand?

The ruins of the Venetian castle at the western end of the village (locals call it the Kastro) have the classic view, and they're the most crowded spot on the island. In summer they're full well before sunset. The lanes just below and the windmills along the edge of the village are slightly less packed and show the same horizon. For the view of Oia itself glowing in the light, stand further east, looking back along the village.

Is a restaurant or bar table better?

Often, yes. You get a seat, a drink and no elbows. Sunset tables book out days ahead in summer, and most places ask for a minimum spend. Book directly and check the table actually faces west.

How do we get back?

This is the part nobody warns you about. Straight after sunset, everyone leaves at once. The bus queue back to Fira stretches down the road, taxis are booked, and the car parks jam. Stay for dinner and head back an hour or two later, or book a transfer in advance. If you're staying in Oia, this is its one big advantage.

Where else to watch

• Imerovigli and Skaros Rock: the sun sets over the caldera with Oia in the distance. Much calmer.
• Firostefani: easy to reach from Fira on foot, plenty of bars.
• Pyrgos: high above the island, looking over the whole caldera.
• Akrotiri lighthouse: at the southwestern tip, wild and open, with no village in sight. You'll need a car.
• A sunset boat: you see the cliffs lit up from below.

See it once in Oia on a first visit. Then spend your other evenings somewhere else.
