By JourneyCitiesUpdated 6 min read6 sources checked

Travelling to Sintra from Lisbon or the Estoril-Cascais coast is one of the cheapest and easiest rail journeys in Europe, provided you leave any rental car behind. Located 28 kilometres northwest of central Lisbon, Sintra is connected to the capital every 10 to 20 minutes by suburban commuter trains operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP). The Municipality of Sintra enforces a camera-monitored ban on non-resident private cars across the historic town centre and all mountain palace roads. Arriving at Sintra Train Station (Estação de Sintra) and transferring onto the dedicated Scotturb 434 and 435 palace buses, or walking the signposted forest trails, is the fastest way to reach the monuments. For a full overview of how the four palace zones fit together, read our Sintra travel guide.

Taking the CP Train from Lisbon: Rossio vs Oriente Station

Comboios de Portugal (CP) operates two overlapping urban train branches that terminate at Sintra Station (the very last stop on the line, one stop past Portela de Sintra):

  • From Lisbon Rossio Station (Best for Baixa, Chiado & Alfama). Housed behind a striking 19th-century Neo-Manueline horseshoe-arched facade between Praça do Rossio and Praça dos Restauradores, Rossio is Lisbon's most central station. Take the interior escalators up to the upper-level platforms, where direct trains to Sintra depart every 20 minutes from 06:08 until 00:38 (40 minutes journey time).
  • From Oriente, Roma-Areeiro, Entrecampos or Sete Rios (Best for Airport, Parque das Nações & Saldanha). If your Lisbon hotel is near the Red, Yellow, or Blue metro lines, or if you are coming straight from Lisbon Airport (LIS), do not backtrack to Rossio. Board the Oriente-to-Sintra CP line directly at Oriente (47 minutes), Entrecampos (39 minutes), or Sete Rios (36 minutes), where trains run every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays.

Crucial Ticket Queue Tip at Rossio Station. Between 08:00 and 10:30, the ticket machines and manned counters inside Rossio Station regularly develop 30-to-45-minute tourist queues. Avoid this entirely by buying and loading your reusable paper Navegante Occasional Card (formerly Viva Viagem, €0.50 card cost) the evening before at any smooth, uncrowded Lisbon Metro station. Load either a return CP train fare (€4.90 round-trip as of November 2026) or €10.00 in Zapping stored value (€2.00 per train ride). You can also load the €11.15 24-hour Navegante Train + Metro pass. Remember that every passenger, even children and couples sharing an itinerary, must hold their own individual Navegante card to tap BOTH in at Lisbon and out at Sintra's exit turnstiles.

Navigating Sintra's Mountain Buses: Scotturb 434 vs 435

When you exit the right-hand doors of Sintra Train Station, you are still 1.2 kilometres east of the historic village centre (Sintra-Vila) and 300 vertical metres below the mountain palaces. Directly outside the station exit stand the stops for the two official tourist bus loops operated by Scotturb:

  • Bus 434 (Circuito da Pena / Pena Circuit). This one-way clockwise mountain loop climbs from Sintra Train Station to Sintra-Vila (National Palace) to Castle of the Moors to National Palace of Pena to Sintra-Vila to Sintra Train Station. Because the upper forestry road is one-way, if you want to visit both Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle on the same morning. Either visit the Moorish Castle first and walk 300 metres uphill to Pena Park Gate. Visit Pena Palace first and walk 300 metres downhill to the Moorish Castle before catching Bus 434 back down to town.
  • Bus 435 (Villa Express 4 Palácios). Using smaller midibuses built for narrow stone garden lanes, the 435 links Sintra Train Station to Sintra-Vila (National Palace) to Quinta da Regaleira to Seteais Palace to Monserrate Palace and returns to the station.

As of November 2026, a single point-to-point ride on Bus 434 or 435 costs €4.55. A full single-loop ticket on the 434 costs €8.50, while the 24-hour Hop-on Hop-off pass covering both Bus 434 and Bus 435 costs €13.50. Lisbon's Navegante card is not valid on Scotturb tourist buses, though contactless bank cards and cash work on board.

Walking from the Station & Using Uber, Bolt or Tuk-Tuks

You do not need to pay €4.55 for a bus just to reach Sintra-Vila or Quinta da Regaleira. Turning left out of Sintra Train Station along the sculpture-lined footpath of Volta do Duche brings you to the Sintra National Palace in 12 to 15 minutes (1.1 km). Continuing another 10 minutes along Rua Barbosa du Bocage delivers you straight to Quinta da Regaleira.

What about Uber, Bolt, and Tuk-Tuks? Rideshare cars (Uber and Bolt) operate widely around Sintra and cost only €6.00 to €10.00 per car from Sintra Station out to Monserrate Palace or the Convent of the Capuchos. However, be aware of two major pitfalls on the upper mountain. First, private rideshares are legally barred from entering the final restricted forestry loop past the Moorish Castle up to Pena Palace during daytime enforcement hours. If a driver drops you at the lower barrier, you still face a steep uphill hike. Second, calling an Uber or Bolt to pick you up from Pena Palace or Cabo da Roca in the late afternoon frequently fails due to one-way traffic tailbacks and weak 4G signal. Electric tuk-tuks and vintage jeeps waiting outside Sintra Station charge €5.00 to €10.00 per person for a transfer uphill. Still, they travel in the exact same single-lane mountain traffic as Bus 434.

Arriving from Cascais & Estoril (Buses 1623, 1624 & Cabo da Roca)

If you are staying on the coast in Cascais or Estoril, or want to return from Sintra to Lisbon via the scenic Atlantic coast, two regional Carris Metropolitana buses depart from outside Cascais Villa shopping centre (adjacent to Cascais Train Station):

  • Bus 1623 (Formerly 417 , Direct Inland Highway). This bus runs every 30 minutes directly between Cascais and Sintra Station in 30 minutes (€2.60 cash on board or €1.55 with a Zapping-loaded Navegante card as of November 2026).
  • Bus 1624 (Formerly 403 , Scenic Cabo da Roca Coastal Route). Winds for 65 minutes from Cascais past Guincho surf beach up to the lighthouse cliffs of Cabo da Roca and down through Colares into Sintra Station (€2.60 cash or €1.55 Navegante Zapping).

Where to Park If You Are on a Portugal Road Trip

If you are driving a rental car between Porto, Coimbra, or Obidos and the Algarve. Want to stop in Sintra without entering the camera-enforced traffic ban zone in Sintra-Vila, never follow GPS directions toward "Palácio da Pena" or "Centro Histórico". Instead, navigate to the free and low-cost municipal park-and-ride lots around Portela de Sintra Train Station (Parque de Estacionamento da Portela de Sintra, 400 spaces) or the outer perimeter lot at Cavaleira /Interface de Transportes. From Portela de Sintra, you can hop one stop (2 minutes) on the train to Sintra Station or catch Carris Metropolitana bus 1253 directly to Cabo da Roca.

Before boarding your evening return train from Sintra Station back to Lisbon Rossio or Oriente, keep your tapped Navegante card safely in your wallet until you pass through the exit turnstiles at the Lisbon end. Ticket inspectors regularly check cards on evening commuter trains between Queluz-Belas and Benfica, and an unvalidated card carries an on-the-spot penalty fare even if you hold a paper receipt.

In addition, remember that the last direct CP train from Sintra to Lisbon Rossio departs shortly after midnight. Meanwhile, the last Bus 434 and 435 palace shuttles leave the mountain monuments between 18:00 and 19:15 depending on the season.
