Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Pirate Island: Boat vs Driving & Hiking Guide

How to experience the surreal white sandbars and neon-turquoise shallows of Balos Lagoon by boat or cliff trail.

At the wild north-western tip of Crete on the uninhabited Gramvousa Peninsula (52 kilometres west of Chania), a white-sand tomboloisthmus links the rocky island-mountain of Cape Tigani to the mainland, creating the world-famous double-sided Balos Lagoon. Because the white sea sand is mixed with millions of microscopic pink coral shells and the water over the sandbars is only ankle-to-waist deep (30 to 80 centimetres), the lagoon glows in ten shades of neon mint, aquamarine and sapphire.

Way 1: By Excursion Boat from Kissamos Port (Easiest, Includes Gramvousa Castle)

If you want a stress-free day that avoids unpaved mountain roads AND lets you visit the dramatic island fortress of Imeri Gramvousa, drive or take the morning KTEL bus from Chania to Kissamos (Kastelli) Port (38 km west of Chania), where large cruisers and smaller speedboats depart between early in the morning and in the late morning:

  • Stop 1, Imeri Gramvousa Island & The 1579 Venetian Castle: the boat stops first for two hours at uninhabited Gramvousa Island (where you can photograph the rusty 1968 shipwreck of the freighter Dimitrios P in the bay, swim off the beach, and climb 20 minutes up a rocky stone path to the 137-metre summit of the 1579 Venetian Fortress for a sweeping view down over the reefs).
  • Stop 2, Balos Lagoon (2.5 to 3 Hours): the boat sails 15 minutes across the bay and drops you directly at the Balos beach rocks/pier with zero uphill hiking required.

Way 2: By Road & The Famous Cliff Viewpoint Trail (For Early Birds Before the Boats Land)

The famous bird's-eye postcard photograph of Balos Lagoon is taken not from the beach, but from the stone hiking trail descending the mountain cliff. From the village of Kaliviani (near Kissamos), a rough, unpaved 8-kilometre coastal dirt track winds along the cliff edge to the upper car park (note: standard car-rental insurance excludes damage on unpaved dirt tracks, and during peak summer local authorities often run 4x4 shuttle buses from Kaliviani or restrict private non-4x4 cars, check locally in Kaliviani). From the upper parking lot, a stepped 1.2-kilometre stone trail descends to the lagoon in 25 minutes (passing the famous panoramic photo viewpoint halfway down) and takes 35 to 40 minutes to walk back up in the afternoon, wear proper trainers and bring 2 litres of water.
