Getting Around Crete: Renting a Car (VOAK Highway Rules) vs KTEL Green Buses

Navigating Crete's reliable green KTEL coach network and learning the local shoulder-driving rule on the VOAK highway.

Whether you choose to rent a car or travel exclusively by public bus depends on which sights are on your list: you can easily visit Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Knossos, Agios Nikolaos, Samaria Gorge, Balos (by boat) and Elafonisi using only Crete's excellent public bus network, whereas a rental car gives you total freedom for south-coast coves, sunset beaches and mountain tavernas.

1. Using Crete's Public "KTEL" Green Coaches (Without a Car)

Two coordinated regional bus companies, KTEL Chania-Rethymno in the west and KTEL Heraklion-Lasithi in the east, operate modern, air-conditioned green coaches with luggage holds below:

  • The Northern Spine (Every 30 to 60 Minutes): coaches run hourly throughout the day between Chania ↔ Rethymno (60 mins, ~standard fare) ↔ Heraklion (90 mins from Rethymno / 2h 40m from Chania, ~standard fare) ↔ Agios Nikolaos (60 mins from Heraklion, ~standard fare).
  • Direct Morning Beach & Gorge Buses (May to October): from Chania Central Bus Station (Kydonias Street, 5 mins' walk from the Old Town), direct morning buses depart daily for Kissamos Port (timed to the Balos Lagoon boat), Elafonisi Pink Beach, Falassarna, Omalos (Samaria Gorge) and Hora Sfakion (for Loutro). From Rethymno Station, morning buses run to Preveli Beach and Plakias.

2. Three Essential Rules When Driving a Rental Car in Crete

  1. The VOAK National Road "Shoulder Rule": along single-carriageway stretches of the E75 (VOAK) northern highway, there is a wide paved hard shoulder on the right. By universal Cretan custom, slower drivers pull slightly over to the right (straddling the white shoulder line) to let faster overtaking cars pass down the middle, just watch out for slow vehicles or pedestrians on the shoulder before pulling over, and obey the frequent speed cameras at junctions.
  2. Unpaved Dirt Tracks (Balos & Kedrodasos): standard rental-car insurance in Crete strictly voids undercarriage and tyre coverage on unpaved roads (such as the 8 km rocky track to Balos); use the Kissamos boat for Balos instead.
  3. Parking at Chania & Rethymno Old Towns: both Old Towns are pedestrianised; park at the large municipal lots right outside the Venetian walls (such as Talos Square or Reggina in Chania, and the Marina / Fortezza lot in Rethymno).
