Car-Free Loutro, Hora Sfakion, Sweetwater Beach and Aradena Gorge

Sailing 15 minutes from Hora Sfakion into the silent, car-free amphitheatre bay of blue-and-white Loutro.

On the wild, mountainous southern coast of Chania prefecture, in the proud region of Sfakia, where the 2,400-metre White Mountains plunge sheer into the deep blue Libyan Sea, lies a tiny horseshoe bay that looks like a secret Cycladic island hidden inside Crete: Loutro. Because zero roads reach Loutro (there is not a single car, motorbike or bicycle in the village), the only sound you hear from your waterfront balcony is the gentle lap of turquoise water against pebble stones.

How to Get to Loutro (15-Minute Ferry or Water Taxi from Hora Sfakion)

Drive 75 minutes south from Chania (or 60 minutes from Rethymno) through the green gorge of Askifou and down the dramatic coastal switchbacks to the small port of Hora Sfakion (Sfakia) (also served by direct morning KTEL buses from Chania). Leave your car in the parking lot above Hora Sfakion harbour and step onto either the ANENDYK coastal ferry (15 minutes) or a private/shared water taxi boat (10 minutes), which rounds the cliff headland into Loutro Bay.

Three Memorable Hikes & Boat Hops from Loutro

  1. Sweetwater Beach (Glyka Nera, Between Hora Sfakion and Loutro): named one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, Glyka Nera ("Sweet Water") sits at the foot of a sheer 300-metre vertical limestone cliff halfway between Hora Sfakion and Loutro (reached by a 10-minute boat taxi from either port or a 45-minute cliffside hike along the E4 trail). It takes its name from the natural underground freshwater springs that bubble up right through the pebbles on the beach, dig a small hole in the pebbles with your hands two metres from the salty sea and it fills immediately with cold, drinkable fresh mountain water.
  2. Marmara ("Marble") Beach & Aradena Gorge: walk one hour west along the coast from Loutro (or take the morning boat taxi) to Marmara, a surreal tiny cove where the white marble walls of Aradena Gorge (spanned high above at 138 metres by Greece's highest steel bungee-jumping bridge) meet sea caves and a cliff-top taverna (Dialiskari).
  3. Finix & The Venetian Castle Above Loutro: climb 15 minutes behind Loutro to the ruins of ancient Phoenix (mentioned in Acts 27 as the safe winter harbour St Paul's ship tried to reach) and the 19th-century fort overlooking the bay.
