Where to Stay in Crete: Chania vs Rethymno, Heraklion and Elounda/Agios Nikolaos

How to choose the right base, or split your stay, across Crete's 260-kilometre coastline.

Because driving from one end of Crete to the other takes nearly five hours, where you sleep determines what you can comfortably see. Use this simple rule of thumb: if you have 3 to 4 nights, pick Chania (or Rethymno); if you have 5 to 7+ nights, split your stay between West Crete (Chania) and East-Central Crete (Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos/Elounda) so you never backtrack.

1. Chania Old Town & The Western Coast (Best Overall Base for First-Timers & Lagoons)

If your dream of Crete is romantic lantern-lit Venetian alleys at night combined with day trips to Balos Lagoon, Elafonisi Pink Beach, Falassarna and Samaria Gorge / Loutro, stay in Chania:

  • Inside Chania Old Town (Topanas, Splantzia & Koum Kapi): sleep inside a restored 17th-century Venetian nobleman's mansion (such as Casa Delfino, Domus Renier or Serenissima) within a 3-minute walk of the harbour lighthouse and KTEL bus station.
  • Want a Sandy Beach Resort Right by Chania? look 4 km west at the three golden sandy coves of Chryssi Akti (Golden Beach) and Agii Apostoli, or 10 km west along the resort strip of Agia Marina and Platanias.

2. Rethymno (Best Central Base Combining an Old Town with a Long Sandy Beach)

Located 1 hour east of Chania and 1 hour 15 minutes west of Heraklion/Knossos. Unlike Chania (where the main sandy beaches sit 15 to 20 minutes' walk outside the Venetian harbour), Rethymno's 12-kilometre Blue-Flag sandy beach starts literally at the eastern edge of the Old Town. Staying here lets you visit both Western Crete and Knossos/Preveli with equal ease.

3. Heraklion (Best for Short Stays Focused on Knossos & Morning Santorini Ferries)

If you are spending 1 or 2 nights before catching an early in the morning catamaran to Santorini and want to tour Knossos Palace and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, book near Heraklion's pedestrian Lions Square (Morosini Fountain) and Old Harbour.

4. Elounda & Agios Nikolaos (Best for 5-Star Luxury Resorts, Honeymoons & Calm Bays)

Overlooking Mirabello Bay and Spinalonga in eastern Crete, home to Greece's most celebrated five-star sea-front villa resorts with private coves and infinity pools.
