Hiking Samaria Gorge (16 km): Complete Logistics, Iron Gates and Imbros Alternative

Step-by-step logistics for descending Europe's famous 16km alpine canyon from Omalos to the Libyan Sea.

Carved through the heart of the White Mountains National Park (Lefka Ori) in south-western Crete, the Samaria Gorge (Faraggi Samarias) is one of the longest and most dramatic alpine canyons in Europe. Starting at 1,250 metres elevation at Xyloskalo (on the Omalos Plateau) and descending for 16 kilometres (13 km inside the national park + 3 km to the beach) straight to the shore of the Libyan Sea at the car-free village of Agia Roumeli, the hike takes 5 to 7 hours of continuous downhill walking through ancient cypress and pine forests, abandoned Samaria village (home to endemic kri-kri wild Cretan goats) and sheer 300-metre limestone walls. (Open daily from 1 May to 31 October, weather permitting).

Crucial Logistics: Why You Should Take the Public KTEL Bus (Not a Rental Car)

Because Samaria is a one-way linear hike that starts high in the mountains at Xyloskalo (Omalos) and ends on the southern coast at Agia Roumeli (which has zero road access, you can only leave Agia Roumeli by sea ferry), if you park a rental car at the top at Omalos, you have to take a late-afternoon ferry + a second mountain bus all the way back up to retrieve your car at night. Instead, use the seamless Public KTEL Chania "Samaria Combined Ticket":

  1. Morning: buy a return bus ticket ("Chania → Omalos & Sougia/Hora Sfakion → Chania") at Chania Central Bus Station; the bus drops you at the Xyloskalo trailhead early in the morning to early in the morning.
  2. Morning: descend the wooden-railed switchbacks, pause at the halfway rest stop of abandoned Samaria Village, walk through the 3.5-metre-wide "Iron Gates" (Portes), and emerge at Agia Roumeli for a swim in the Libyan Sea and a cold beer.
  3. Evening: board the in the early evening coastal ferry (45 to 60 mins along the sheer southern cliffs) to Sougia or Hora Sfakion, where KTEL buses wait right on the pier to drive you back to Chania late in the evening.

Want a Shorter, Easier 2.5-Hour Canyon Hike? Do Imbros Gorge or Agia Irini.

If 16 kilometres of steep rocky steps sounds too strenuous for your knees, hike neighbouring Imbros Gorge (8 kilometres long, gentle gradient, taking just 2 to 2.5 hours through a 1.6-metre-wide rock slot right down to Komitades near Hora Sfakion).
