Alter Markt Guide
The old market square at the centre of Dortmund, best used as a hub for a walk.
Alter Markt is the old market place of Dortmund, and it is smaller and plainer than most visitors expect. Heavy bombing in the Second World War destroyed most of the historic centre, so the buildings around the square are mostly postwar, with a few older touches. The square's value is not its architecture. It is a place where streets meet, where people sit with a coffee between errands, and where the city gathers when something is happening. That makes it a useful hub, and a poor destination on its own.
A short loop that works
The easiest way to use the square is as the middle of a thirty to sixty minute walk. Here is the order we suggest from the station side:
- Leave the Hauptbahnhof and walk north-east towards the pedestrian zone, passing the German Football Museum on your way.
- Join Westenhellweg, the long east-west shopping street, and follow it until the church tower appears on one side.
- Step into Reinoldikirche, which stands on the edge of the old market district.
- Cross to Alter Markt and take a seat. This is the moment to eat a snack, watch the square and decide where to go next.
- Walk west to Friedensplatz, where the town hall stands, then loop back through the side streets towards the station.
In practice this loop takes longer than you plan, because shop windows slow you down. Treat it as a flexible hour, and add time if you want a proper meal at one of the restaurants around the square.
What the square is like
By day Alter Markt is calm. Office workers, shoppers and tourists cross it, the terraces fill when the weather allows, and there is plenty of space to stand and look around. In the evening it quietens down quickly, because the nightlife of the city lies elsewhere. If you want bars and a livelier crowd, walk south to Brückstrasse, or head to the neighbourhood restaurants of the Kreuzviertel.
The one season when the square changes completely is winter. From November, the Christmas City programme spreads through the centre, and the area around the church and the square fills with stalls, lights and people. Our Christmas market guide covers the layout. We recommend returning here after dark in that season: the same square that feels almost empty in summer can be hard to cross on a December weekend.
What to skip
Do not travel to Alter Markt expecting a postcard of half-timbered houses. Germany has many cities where that is true, and Dortmund is not one of them. Do not plan a long lunch here either, unless you have chosen a particular restaurant in advance; the better local food is in the neighbourhoods outside the ring. And do not fix a rigid schedule around the square: it is a stop that works best when you arrive with a loose plan and leave when you have had enough.
How it connects
Orientation helps here. The square sits between the church and the town hall quarter, with the pedestrian streets fanning out in several directions, so it is easy to lose your bearings. Keep the church tower in sight and you will always know which way is back to the shopping street.
The square is a five-minute walk from most of the central shopping streets, and the stations of the main Stadtbahn lines are close. For the shops themselves, see our shopping guide. For a planned route that includes the centre alongside the football and industrial sights, the 3-day itinerary shows where a stop on Alter Markt fits.
A last practical note: events come and go on the square throughout the year, such as markets, concerts and seasonal programmes. The city's official events calendar is the reliable source, and you should check it a few days before you travel rather than relying on an older guide.
