Best Time to Visit Gaziantep: Pistachio Harvest, GastroAntep Festival and Seasons
Why spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) are the prime seasons for a Gaziantep culinary trip.
Sitting at 850 metres above sea level on a limestone plateau where the Mediterranean climate meets the dry continental air of northern Mesopotamia, Gaziantep has four distinct seasons with low humidity and bright skies. While its indoor museums, vaulted bazaars and legendary restaurants operate 365 days a year, the two finest windows for walking the cobblestone alleys and cruising the Euphrates at Halfeti are April to early June and September to mid-November.
Spring and the Seasonal Kebab Window (April, May and early June) brings mild, sunny afternoons rising from 21°C in April to 27°C in May, when the hills around Rumkale and Halfeti are carpeted in wildflowers and the rare black roses of Halfeti bloom for the first time in the year. In the city's kebab kitchens, April and May are the only months to taste fresh green-garlic kebab (sarımsak kebabı), spring truffle kebab (keme kebabı) and sweet-tart loquat kebab (yenidünya kebabı) before early June brings sour-cherry kebab (vişne kebabı).
Autumn, Pistachio Harvest & GastroAntep (September, October and November) is the gastronomic peak of the calendar. In late August and September, the new crop of emerald-green boz pistachios arrives in the baklava ovens, village roofs and Almacı Pazarı blaze crimson with strings of drying red peppers and aubergines, and grape harvest turns into sweet bastık (pestil) and walnut sucuk. Every September, the city hosts the international GastroAntep Culture and Gastronomy Festival, drawing Michelin-starred chefs, tastings and concerts to Festival Park, while daytime temperatures sit at an ideal 22°C to 30°C.
Summer (mid-June, July and August) is hot and bone-dry (afternoon highs of 35°C to 38°C), though the 850-metre altitude and lack of coastal humidity mean shaded stone courtyards, underground kasteller and evenings remain pleasant. Tour Zeugma in the air-conditioned morning hours and take the late-afternoon boat at Rumkale.
Winter (December to March) is crisp and chilly (daytime highs of 8°C to 12°C, with occasional light snow in January), which locals consider the best weather of all for steaming bowls of morning beyran and hot menengiç coffee. Check what to wear in Gaziantep before packing.
