Where to Stay in Gaziantep: Stone Mansions in Bey Mahallesi vs Modern Şehitkamil
Choosing between an atmospheric 19th-century stone courtyard mansion by the Copper Bazaar or modern Şehitkamil.
Accommodation in Gaziantep splits neatly into two contrasting experiences: sleeping inside a thick-walled, 19th-century stone courtyard mansion (konak) right in the historic lanes of Şahinbey (Bey Mahallesi and Kalealtı), or booking a modern, full-service international hotel with a spa and underground parking in Şehitkamil (İncilipınar and Mücahitler).
1. Kalealtı & The Historic Bazaars (Best for Walking to Baklava, Kebabs & Copper Souks)
Immediately south and east of Gaziantep Castle around the Copper Bazaar, Tahmis Kahvesi and Eski Belediye Caddesi. Staying here puts you in the exact middle of the action: you can walk out of your room early in the morning straight to Metanet for morning beyran or Zekeriya Usta for hot katmer, drop your afternoon shopping bags of copper and pistachios back at your room in two minutes, and dine at İmam Çağdaş across the street. Look for restored caravanserai properties, most notably 1577 Hışva Han right at the foot of the castle or restored stone merchant mansions like Anadolu Evleri and Sirehan Hotel.
2. Bey Mahallesi (Best for Quiet Stone Courtyards & Boutique Charm)
Ten minutes' walk west of the castle across Atatürk Bulvarı. Because Bey Mahallesi is a residential conservation zone of narrow basalt alleys rather than a commercial market, nights here are wonderfully quiet. Dozens of two-storey 1880s Armenian and Ottoman limestone mansions have been converted into 8-to-15-room boutique hotels built around jasmine-scented hayat courtyards with high wooden ceilings and cave cellars.
3. Şehitkamil: İncilipınar, Mücahitler &Alleben (Best for Modern 5-Star Comfort, Parking & Museums)
Stretching one to two kilometres north of the Old Town between the 100. Yıl Kültür Parkı, the Archaeology Museum, the Train Station (Gar) and the Zeugma Mosaic Museum. If you are driving a rental car (as the narrow alleys of Bey Mahallesi have very limited street parking), prefer spacious modern rooms with lifts, indoor pools and fitness centres, or want to be halfway between the Old Town and Koçak Baklava / Halil Usta, book along Prof. Muammer Aksoy Bulvarı or near Sanko Park in Şehitkamil.
