How to Get to Georgetown: Cheddi Jagan (GEO) and Eugene F. Correia (OGL) Airports

Practical transport guide to Georgetown covering international flights into Cheddi Jagan Airport (GEO) at Timehri, regional and bush flights at Eugene F. Correia Airport (OGL) at Ogle, and river ferries.

Uniquely for a small capital, Georgetown is served by two distinct international airports with very different roles: long-haul jets land 41 kilometres south along the Demerara River at Timehri, while regional Caribbean turboprops and all domestic rainforest flights to Kaieteur Falls and the Rupununi operate from Ogle just ten minutes east of the city centre.

1. Cheddi Jagan International Airport (IATA: GEO) at Timehri

Located 41 kilometres south of central Georgetown on the east bank of the Demerara River (originally built as Atkinson Field by the United States Army Air Forces in 1941), Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) is Guyana's primary long-haul gateway.

  • Direct flight routes: Direct jet flights connect GEO with New York (JFK), Miami, Houston, Toronto, London (via St Lucia or Barbados), Panama City, Port of Spain (Trinidad), Bridgetown (Barbados), and Paramaribo.
  • Airport transfer to Georgetown: The 41-kilometre drive north along the East Bank Demerara Highway (and the newer Eccles to Mandela four-lane highway bypass) takes 50 to 75 minutes depending on time of day. Official accredited airport taxis wait outside the arrivals hall with regulated zone fares to Kingston, Cummingsburg, and Queenstown; most hotels can also pre-arrange a named driver.

2. Eugene F. Correia International Airport (IATA: OGL) at Ogle

Situated on the East Coast of Demerara just 10 kilometres (15 to 20 minutes by taxi) east of downtown Georgetown, Eugene F. Correia International Airport (universally known as Ogle Airport) is the hub for both regional short-haul international flights (connecting directly to Bridgetown in Barbados, Port of Spain in Trinidad, and Zorg en Hoop Airport in Paramaribo, Suriname) and all domestic bush flights operated by Trans Guyana Airways, Roraima Airways, and Jags Aviation to Kaieteur National Park, Lethem, Iwokrama, and Annai.

3. Overland Ferry from Suriname and Local Getting Around

  • Courantyne River Ferry from Suriname: Travellers linking Guyana and Suriname overland ride the official roll-on/roll-off MV Canawaima ferry across the Courantyne River between South Drain (near Nieuw Nickerie, Suriname) and Moleson Creek in eastern Guyana, followed by a three-hour coastal drive west via New Amsterdam and the Berbice River Bridge into Georgetown.
  • Taxis and Minibuses in Georgetown: Registered yellow-plate and hotel-affiliated taxis are the safest, most comfortable way to move between downtown heritage sights, the Botanical Gardens, and the Kingston Seawall; agree on the fare in Guyanese dollars before setting off.
