How to Get to Marrakech

Getting into Marrakech is easy. Getting to your riad door inside the medina is the part that needs a plan.

How far is the airport from the medina?

Marrakech Menara (RAK) sits only a few kilometres south-west of the walls, and the drive usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Morocco is investing heavily in its airports ahead of the 2030 World Cup, so expect some building work around the terminals.

Is there an airport bus?

Yes. City bus 19 runs a loop between the airport, Jemaa el-Fna and the train station, roughly every half hour. The stop is across the car park rather than at the coach bays by arrivals. It's cheap and has space for bags, but it only helps if your riad is near the square. Check the timetable locally, since frequencies change.

Should I take a taxi?

For a first arrival, a taxi or a transfer arranged by your riad is simplest. Airport taxis are supposed to follow an official fare but often quote more, so agree the price before you get in. A pre-booked riad pickup costs a little more but includes someone walking you from the car to the door, which matters after dark.

Can I get there by train?

Yes. ONCF's Al Atlas trains run from Casablanca in about two and a half to three hours, and from Rabat, Tangier and Fez with longer journeys. From Tangier, the fastest option today is the Al Boraq high-speed train as far as Casablanca, then a change. Seats are reserved, so book on the ONCF website or app, or at the station. The Marrakech station is in Gueliz, a short taxi ride from the medina.

When does the high-speed line reach Marrakech?

Not yet. Construction of the Kenitra to Marrakech extension began in 2025 and is due to be finished before the 2030 World Cup. Once open, Tangier to Marrakech should take under three hours. Until then, plan on the conventional train.

Getting around the city. Inside the medina you walk. Everywhere else, use the beige petit taxis, which take up to three passengers. Drivers are required to use the meter, and many will try to avoid it, so ask for "le compteur" or agree a fare before setting off.
