More than a thousand years before the Great Pyramid of Giza was built in Egypt or Stonehenge was raised in England, between 3800 BCE and 2500 BCE. During that era, Neolithic farmers on the tiny islands of Malta and Gozo quarried, carved, and erected the oldest freestanding stone structures on earth. Even more remarkably, just four kilometres south of Valletta in the town of Paola, they carved a three-storey subterranean necropolis straight into the living globigerina rock: the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum (UNESCO World Heritage Ref, 130). Use this practical guide to secure Hypogeum tickets and combine Paola and the southern cliff temples with our 3-day Valletta itinerary.

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum: What You See 10.6 Metres Underground

Stonemasons cutting cisterns for new townhouses in Paola discovered this complex by accident in 1902 when they broke through an underground chamber roof. Today, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum (from the Greek hypogaion, "underground") is the only prehistoric subterranean temple-necropolis in the world. Over a span of 1,500 years (c, 4000 BCE to 2500 BCE), Neolithic builders using only flint, obsidian, and deer-antler picks hollowed out 500 square metres of interconnected halls across three superimposed underground levels descending 10.6 metres deep. Inside, the remains of an estimated 7,000 individuals were deposited along with figurines such as the famous terracotta Sleeping Lady.

During your strictly timed 50-minute audio-guided visit (which begins with a 15-minute introductory film), you walk along suspended walkways through the three levels:

  • The Upper Level (3600 to 3300 BCE). Natural rock cavities expanded into burial chambers near the surface.
  • The Middle Level (3300 to 3000 BCE). Here the builders imitated above-ground megalithic architecture in negative relief, carving curved corbelled vaults, massive trilithon doorways, and the Oracle Room, whose ceiling is painted with spirals and honeycombs in red ochre. Beside it, a carved wall niche resonates at a deep acoustic frequency of 110 Hz when a male baritone voice speaks into it.
  • The Lower Level (3150 to 2500 BCE). Reached via a striking seven-step staircase where the last two steps hang suspended above the floor, viewing the masterpiece facade of the "Holy of Holies".

How to Book Hypogeum Tickets (and How Last-Minute Tickets Work)

To prevent carbon dioxide, human body heat, and humidity from growing algae on the 5,000-year-old red ochre ceiling spirals. Heritage Malta therefore caps entry at 10 visitors per hour for 8 tours a day (09:00 to 16:00) , just 80 people per day in total:

  1. Standard Advance Tickets (€40.00 adult / €25.00 youth & senior / €15.00 child aged 6 to 11 as of November 2026). Book online at heritagemalta.mt as soon as your trip dates are set (typically 6 to 10 weeks ahead in spring, summer, and autumn).
  2. What if online tickets are sold out? (The €55.00 Last-Minute Ticket Trick). Heritage Malta holds back two spaces on the 12:00 tour and two spaces on the 16:00 tour every day as "Last-Minute Tickets" (€55.00 per person regardless of age). These go on sale the day before solely in person at two ticket desks: the Fort St Elmo ticket desk in Valletta or the Gozo Citadel Visitor Centre at 09:00 sharp. Queue at Fort St Elmo at 08:30 the morning before you want to visit to grab one!
  3. Mandatory Rules at the Door. Arrive 15 minutes before your hour slot with your passport/ID. Wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip-flops); children under age 6 are not admitted; and all cameras, phones, and bags must be locked in the free entrance lockers (strictly zero photography inside).

Combining the Hypogeum with Tarxien Temples and Clifftop Ħaġar Qim & Mnajdra

Immediately upon exiting the Hypogeum in Paola, walk five minutes (400 metres) east along Triq Hal Tarxien to the Tarxien Temples (€6.00 adult as of November 2026). Built between 3600 and 2500 BCE, Tarxien is the most intricately decorated megalithic complex in Malta. It is famous for the lower legs of a colossal three-metre statue, animal reliefs, and double-spiral altar blocks. For the most striking coastal setting on the island, ride Tallinja Bus 74 (35 minutes from Valletta Terminus) to the southern sea cliffs of Qrendi. Here you can walk between Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples on a €10.00 combined ticket. Here the South Temple of Mnajdra is aligned with such astronomical precision that the rising sun illuminates its inner altar stones on the spring and autumn equinoxes.
